Let's try again.

Living in the 31st century, the Galaxy of Kings (a galaxy trillions of light years from Earth, also considerably technologically and magically advanced) is a lot like Medieval Earth, with the great King Genuine slowly losing control to the pirates and gangs that pollute the further reaches of the galaxy. A relatively small galaxy, filled with humans and other creatures who travel between planets using ships and/or magic.

There are 3 solar systems in this Galaxy, each ruled by a separate lord.

There is the Head solar system, which holds the Royal Planet, and the Noble Planet, where those of noble blood are born and live in style and comfort. Knights are raised, trained and taught here.

There is the Merchant solar system, with three planets (Merchant 1, Merchant 2, Merchant 3) filled with rich merchants and businessmen. These three planets have atmospheres not quite as comfortable as those in the Head solar system, but are nice all the same.

Then there is a solar system filled with four 'dead' planets and asteroids........planets where life is tough, food is scarce, but ores and precious stones are mined. Pirates make their homes in the asteroids and attack ships that carry the produce of this solar system to the Merchant system. The four planets are Ifrit, sometimes so hot the surface will burst into flames, forcing residents to flee. It is filled with tough metals. Shiva, the coldest planet, where diamonds are plentiful, and Quezacoatl, where the surface is uninhabitable, but the underground is rich in life. Honey mines are scattered all over the underground, along with farms. Then there is the Coal planet, filled with fossil fuels, and maybe the most habitable of all four planets.

Now, for characters.

Name: Obvious.
Gender: Or....not....
Age: Optional (some females get very picky about their age)
Race: Human, alien, whatever you desire. No dogs, please. :P
Planet: Where is your character from?
Occupation:What's your job?
Magic: Does your character know magic? If you're from one of the dead planets, obviously your magic will reflect that. If you are a Knight, then you will have some knowledge of magic.
Ship: What's your ships name? And a brief description. Does it require magic? Is it purely technology? What colour is it?
Background: A little background info would be nice.

Hopefully this will kick off and last at least 10 pages. And yes, I know I'm not a scientist, but I've tried to make it as interesting as possible.

Name Heather Clearway
Gender Female
Age 20
Race Intelligent Ape
Planet Ifrit
Occupation Waste disposal
Magic A lot of fire magic, and a bit of Ice and Thunder magic
Ship The Taker. A red waste disposal ship, powered by fire magic. Not very fast, and not so well armed. Can travel long distances though.
Background Heather's father was in waste disposal, as was her father, and his father, and so on and so forth. Apart from the stench, Heather loves her job. She travels the Galaxy, collecting waste, and burying it on Ifrit. After the seasonal fires, it makes great fertilizer. She hears all the gossip, and gets tonnes of free gifts when she visits the Merchant planets.

Okay, next!

Name: Mikhail Raleigh
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Race: Human/Comp (For more, see below)
Planet: Shiva
Occupation: Independent adjudicator (read forensic scientist in general, though the role is somewhat like a coroner)
Magic: Mostly Ice and Time based. Uses some Healing Magic.
Ship: The Spilsbury XXXVII. Because adjudication often makes you enemies, it has quite an amount of firepower, speed and range. It is not designed for long-term combat, but contains a rather state-of-the-art warp drive for quick getaways. It contains enough facilities for a small recreational area, a forensic laboratory, and a substantial library.
Background: The sardonic Mikhail Raleigh joined the Adjudicator's Academy at the age of 6, and trained also to be a Comp (like a Mentat from Dune, only less so). A prank gone wrong caused a brain injury to Raleigh, and he began to play less into the politics of the Adjudicator's organisation. A rather sordid mission where he was almost coerced into freeing a pedophilic politician on the Noble World caused him to rail against the Adjudicators. While 'excommunicated' from their organisation, he is respected as being one of the most moral Adjudicators, but at times, he also becomes something of a vigilante and often kills those who escape justice. A tormented soul.

We'll wait for a few more people to sign in (if they do) before we start.

Name: R'ae
Gender: Female
Age: unclear
Race: yellow-green S'kele (the S'kele are small, furry creatures (about one meter tall and vaguely resembling a spider if it was as furry as a cat), according to their legends from another galaxy)
Planet: While the origin of the S'kele is kel't sl'a (which is as real as Atlantis in real life), R'ae is from Shiva
Occupation: While her titles changed, she normally worked in spaceships to make sure things are working
Magic: Can alter her and others perception of time, has 'presentational' magic ie: can sense people around her and communicate via visual illusions and/or sound. (She refers to it not as magic but as technology of the elders)
Ship: The Ntŭk'al is a strange thing, which she literally builds in her garage (even though 'her' house belongs to her parents). It is tiny and stealthy and seems to work only due to prayer. It is only safe to use if the time perception is altered in a way that seconds appear like hours because otherwise hyperspace irregularities would destroy it as soon as it enters Warp/Hyperspace.
Background: Her parents work as civil engineers but she was infected early with what the S'kele call hvi-nt'tanah the yearning (literally translated 'hunger') for the stars. She adhers to the traditional religion of her tribe, which for non-S'kele appears utterly quixotic and strange.

Name: Sheo
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Race: Human
Planet: Merchant 2
Occupation: Runner (Take materials from dead planets to merchant planets for those on dead planets without ships)
Magic: Extremely Small Amount Known
Ship: Tze
Background: Little is know about sheo's past. He was found as an orphan on Merchant 2 and raised by one of the Merchants. As he aged, he began running from the four dead planets to the shop of the Merchant who raised him, Tze. When Tze died, Sheo sold Tze's shop and bought a ship with the money, which he soon named in honor of the only father he ever knew. Since then he has been running for Merchants mostly on Merchant 2, but a few on the other Merchant Planets. Sheo has even made a few trips to the Royal Planet, taking supplies from the shops to the wealthiest persons of the three solar systems.

BTW Quater if your character is from Shiva it is unlikely that they would acheive an education. Unless he was born of nobles who left the Noble planet for whatever reason.

Wouldn't the Adjudicators do some head-hunting? They'd want (in theory) people from all planets, not just the toffee-nosed ones.

Okay, I will start us off.

Heather scratched her armpit. Her fur was wet with melted snow. She'd been to the planet Shiva to collect waste. Next stop was home.

Heather had been all over the Galaxy, using the Gates to travel to the other solar systems. She had collected all their waste, and was heading back to Ifrit. The seasonal fires would be soon, so the waste would burn and the stench would leave the Planet for a few days. Apart from the mines, Ifrit had no other uses. Apart from her ship, which was older than her grandfather, Heather's family had very little.

"I don't care if we have little! You must ALWAYS carry a little bounty in case of Pirates!" her father had yelled at her.

Heather agreed this was the best advice she'd bee given. You couldn't avoid Pirates your whole life, but as long as you had a little treasure on your ship, you could always barter safe passage. That was where Heather was lucky-lots of people pitied her for her job, and she often got freebies from the Merchant Solar System. She always kept some of her gifts on board as payment should she find the Pirates.

She pulled into the landing bay and parked in her designated garage. She jumped out of the Taker, and unhinged the trailer full of waste. Now for the disgusting bit. Murder was common in the Galaxy, and people thought they could dispose of bodies in the garbage and excriment.

Heather sighed, and dug in.

((Okay. I'll leave it at that.))

***

It had been the end of a rather sordid investigation for Mikhail Raleigh, and he was washing his hands of it. Literally.

One of the merchants on Merchant Planet 2 (which Raleigh privately thought of as Neoplasic Colon. The planet, not the merchant.) had been involved with mining fraud on Coal, deliberately delivering sub-standard equipment masquerading as the best equipment, and causing several deaths.

And then the (censored) of a merchant had the nerve to file an insurance claim, and sue the remaining inhabitants of the particular settlement for all sorts of dangerously ridiculous claims.

Raleigh had grown up on Shiva, before being headhunted by the Adjudicator's guild. He had thought that the inhabitants of Coal had it good, since they could at least go out onto the planet's surface with a minimum of protective gear. But having seen how they lived, in comparison to the merchants and the royals and nobles, he felt more kinship with them than those upper-class sods.

Raleigh had adjudicated for the people of Coal, and had managed to win. But the merchant was not satisfied with this. In fact, he made threats against Raleigh, Coal, and his own adjudicator.

That was not on. The merchant had deliberately killed people, so he could covertly put his own force of workers on in Coal, in order to gain an advantage over his rivals.

50 people. Most serial killers were lucky to approach that.

And so began the rather drawn-out process of removing said merchant from existence.

Raleigh had to admit that he enjoyed killing criminals. Not those who are criminals by circumstance, but by will. Those who are determined to live their lives at the expense of others.

He had just finished cleaning out the airlock (which, thanks to its hyperbaric capabilities, made sure that the merchant's end, though swift, was a messy one, from 12 atmospheres to vacuum in a second), and was turning to washing his hands.

The merchant's death would be blamed on the local criminal gangs he was linked to. The data trail he had planted would see to that. It wasn't just the law that had seen to be carried out, but true justice.

The Adjudicators still respected him, but they were also rather scared of Mikhail Raleigh. He had an intensity about him that seemed disturbing. And while they didn't know about his darker tendencies, they knew that this was someone who wanted justice. Not peace and stability.

He went back to the control area of the ship and looked for the latest Adjudication requests. He was freelance, really, so he could pick and choose what he wanted...

"Oh gross!" Heather cried out. A body of a Ant, decapitated, had been wrapped up in blankets and buried in someone's old compost. Yuck.

"Boss! We have another one!" Heaher cried out.

"Darned it! That's the fifteenth this week! And it's only Wormsday!" her boss groaned over the comm.

"I know..." Heather investigated the body. "Uh-oh, boss, it's a Noble!"

"Oh no........that means we'll be having an intergalactic investigation in a few hours. One bloody Noble out of a billion goes astray, and the whole Universe has to end!" her boss continued whinging.

"Um, boss, this garbage is from Shiva." Heather pointed out.

What would a NOBLE be doing in the slums? thought Heather

Looking at the requests, and finding them to be boring (mostly dispute arbitrations, mostly in divorces), Raleigh was about to pack it in and head off to Shiva when another one popped up.

He read the abstract, not hopeful.

Decapitated Ant found in garbage disposal ship collecting from Shiva. Possibility that it is a Noble.

He frowned. Shiva was very much a slum, despite the diamonds found there. Raleigh only managed to get out because the Adjudicators often headhunted some of the inhabitants for training, and being an orphan, he was one of the first to be snapped up.

He had later found out that the elite of Shiva sold the diamonds for vast amounts of money, and pocketed the difference. Problem is, they were able to claim (through that most vile of arts, creative accountancy) all sorts of losses. Even when taking into consideration the losses experienced by the diamond miners, Raleigh had never found out how. And what was that Noble doing on Shiva? Normally, they wouldn't be seen dead there, at least until now.

Smiling sardonically at his own joke, he assigned himself to the case. Looks like he would have to head for Ifrit. As much as he hated the bitter cold on Shiva, you can wrap up against the cold. Against heat, you could do little but hope that the A/C didn't break down...

He then made preparations to contact the head of the garbage disposal team on Ifrit that discovered the body....

((If you're curious about his appearance, Kezzstar, he is a bit like Dexter Morgan.))
