The wonderful world of drugs.

What do you all think of drugs? Should every single drug be illegal? Where should we draw the line? Why illegalize drugs? Why legalize drugs? Does anybody want to buy drugs? How should society deal with addiction, usage, sale, transportation of drugs or anything like that? Is there a moral difference between drugs taken, and external stimulation such as pornographic materials or video games(*cough* World of Warcraft) ? Do drugs enhance our culture?

Do you personally use drugs of any sort? (medicine, booze, marijuana, crack, all of them combined in a blender while playing world of warcraft, etc)

You should have the right to put whatever you like in your body, food, drugs or otherwise.
Personally I don't use any illegal drugs. I like my hypothalamus to be functioning adequetely at all times.

Legalize everything, regulate and tax the hell out of the drugs that are currently illegal, and use a portion of the money to fund services to help addicts.

I have never used tobacco, alcohol, or any illegal drugs. I only seldom use physician-prescribed medication (maybe an antibiotic every couple of years, and some cough syrup last fall). I have tried caffeine, but I don't seem to react well to it so I've been avoiding it.

While drugs themselves are an inanimate substance, their use eventually causes crime and other social problems. If it were up to me I'd execute everyone involved in the drug trade except for the end users, who I would make more rehab services available for.

Many of those problems are actually a matter of the drugs being illegal than their use in and of themselves. Remember Prohibition?

I only take drugs for medical purporses (and even then, I prefer to avoid them unless a doctor has told me to use them). I don't even drink caffeine.

I support the legalization of all drugs, including the 'hard' ones like heroin and meth. I find it quite shocking that more people can't see the fairly obvious fact that almost all the problems associated with drugs arise due to their illegality. Drug prohibition has been one of the most devastating projects of the last century.

Is the poll supposed to be answered based on which ones we think should be legal, or which ones we personally use?

I can't say much about legalization because I'm not a user and I haven't don't much research on how it would effect everything. If I had to vote on it I would probably vote to legalize (I suppose it depends on what drugs we're talking about). I have had chronic pain for quite some time...it's doing much better presently, but there have been plenty of times in the past that I dearly wished I could use some marijuana without it affecting anything (like doctors refusing to see me).

1. As an Anarchist, I don't see a problem with one using drugs if he wants to. I don't think it's any of my business as long as he doesn't hurt anybody.

2. I take Ritalin, which is a drug. So what if it's a drug? It helps me, I'm better with it, I get a few hours of being able to channel my thoughts and creativity into writing and reading, what's wrong with it? When people tell me it's like coke, I don't argue with it. I like to call it "medical coke". It's a stimulant that I take for the therapeutic effects, lasts longer than street drugs, and doesn't get me addicted to any euphoria.

3. I also get benzos to calm me down when I need them. I would prefer to have a small toke of hash, I think it's better for my health, and yes, for my fun. But for some reason my government thinks it's better to provide me with addictive drugs than to just let me smoke. I hope they would at least authorise use of cannabis as a tranquiliser. When I accidentally stopped cold turkey, it was a nightmare. I still don't try to taper myself off of benzos, because I need them.

4. I don't like it when people tell me "I don't need drugs in order to have fun", as if I'm in a competition with them, "who has the most fun sober". Good for you - I don't have as much fun, I want to smoke. You're not a better person than me just because I'm enjoying recreational use of drugs.

5. There's nothing to smoke in Israel right now, also in Egypt (where most hash comes from to my country), and I don't really have much money anyways, so I drink. That's legal and cheap enough. f**k it, been a drinker for the last 3 years, since turning 18, I don't like it when I start drinking and then crave more. I've managed to overcome it the last weeks - and still, I can't stop drinking at all. That would be boring, and I can't be around people when sober for too long, especially not in public places. I would stop drinking if I could smoke instead.

6. When I used to smoke, it got me off of other drugs (incl. and especially alcohol), and I could smoke everyday and then feel it's enough and have a break for a few days. No cravings. I could have joint or two of hash before going out, have one beer just for the taste, and feel satisfied, no needs, just having fun with my mates. No feeling that I have to "refuel". Isn't it better than having a drinking session?

7. As for the "Gateway Drug" theory - I'm in that direction well without cannabis. When I get cannabis, I'm easily off that road. I'm only 21 and have to make an effort not to become an alcoholic, I've always been interested in experiencing with drugs, and I need drugs. Not because I'm addicted, but because I can't function without any drug at all. Weed can only save me from becoming a junkie, if anything.

8. As for the theory that it would make me withdraw myself from society, and become lazy, blah blah blah - it's the opposite. People always think that I smoke regularly even when I don't, because of my character. If anything, hash helps me to bear being around people, and working and studying (not too stoned, of course).

9. Tobbaco - I smoke, but I'm not addicted. I don't know, some say it's has to do with genes... If so, I'm one of those who are "immune" to nicotine addiction. I started smoking 2.5 years ago, quit when had no money, and started smoking two-three cigarettes when drinking/out, because I enjoy it, but right now I have tobacco in my drawer, and I didn't smoke for 3 days, and I don't feel that I need it. I have a theory that it only helps tobacco companies to say it's "soooooooo addictive". Perhaps people can't quit because everyone tells them it's so impossible to quit, so once they start and once they've been smoking for long enough, they are sure that they can't?

10. Caffeine - I like the taste. I never feel it, except I'm on Ritalin. Then, if I'm drowsy it wakes me up, otherwise it irritates me. But usually I drink it as a flavoured drink, not as a stimulant.

11. Just because I think people should have access to drugs, doesn't mean I think there's no problem with it. I think they should be educated and warned about the dangers, and get help if they want and need it. But I mean real education, with truth about pros and cons, not the lies about marijuana in schools today.

I find it quite shocking that more people can't see the fairly obvious fact that almost all the problems associated with drugs arise due to their illegality. Drug prohibition has been one of the most devastating projects of the last century.

I would like to add, regarding hard drugs - even illegal drug users that I know are afraid of trying heroin. They're not afraid of the legality issue, as they use other illegal substances, but they know it's bad and addictive as hell. The ones who do use it, have their reasons. But if someone wants to use heroin, then legality won't be what's stopping him from doing so.

Saying that if all drugs are legal, than everyone would be a junkie, makes no sense. Alcohol is legal - is everyone an alcoholic? People can get OTC opiates and DXM, how many people you know use this option?

In Europe they have special places where junkies can get their dose, and use sterile needles etc., and heroin that's less destructive than street stuff. Of course, the conservatives were against it, but from what I've read and heard - it's better for both the addicted fellas, and the environment. They don't get diseases from used needles, they have medical supervision, and they don't have to rob anyone for the drug. So, here's how harm reduction works - same number of people using, less crime. You can solve the enviromental problem (crime), while letting junkies use their drug. So drugs don't have to lead to crime... Of course you should help them get out of it if they're addicted to hard drugs - but if an adult person decides to use it, I can only advise him not to do so. A person who's addicted to heroin needs help, not preaching and bashing, anyways.

I also heard from a guy who lived in the Netherlands for a year, that he had many friends in Amsterdam and almost none of them smoked weed. They can legally do so, but most of them just don't. And don't forget - if you buy illegal weed from criminals who deal drugs, there's a bigger chance that it WILL become a gateway drug for you. Your dealer will offer you harder drugs, and you will already be using illegal drugs, so inside that "scene". If you get your weed in a pharmacy or a coffeeshop, the chance of being exposed to harder drugs is much lower.

"War on Drugs" is such a senseless concept, because drugs are not the problem. If someone wants to use destructive drugs, that's the problem. If someone is in depression and becomes an alcoholic, it's better to start a "War on Depression" than on alcohol. Otherwise, he may not be an alcoholic, but still depressed. I don't believe the theory that drugs cause the problems - they may worsen them, but they shouldn't be the problem for themselves. I find it hard to believe that people become addicted to any substance without a problem leading to it. I'm not saying that if you're feeling bad you should become an alcoholic, I'm just saying that drug use is more of a symptom than a problem in those cases, in my opinion. Not an expert, but from what I see, and from my little experience.

If you are on the verge of becoming an addict, you have two problems - the addiction, and what got you there.

To a point I agree with you. Leegalize it.

I dunno... I have pretty deep convictions about keeping a clear head and avoid addictive behaviors (I thought marriage would solve the sex addiction problem, but sadly I found that it put an end to any hope of getting sex with any degree of regularity. *sigh*). I've never smoked ANYTHING. Snorted snuff once, tried dip one time, and that was it. I never felt so clear-headed as I did in the first days of my Ritalin phase, but I found my fog-brain got progressively worse after that until I stopped taking my meds. Now I feel like all I ever want to do is sleep, and I've never used anything at all since college.

I'd love not to feel that way, and if there's something out there that fixes it, hook me up. The worst part of my Ritalin use was it completely killed my creative initiative while I was feeling its effects. And then there was the time I started beating up the school bullies because I was hoping they'd kill me. Apparently it doesn't work if you hurt 'em too bad.
