I struggled through the acute form of this in my 50s (in remission for a long time now and still in one piece). Because it's highly unusual for anyone in their 50s to contract this immune system related disease I wondered if it might be more common to those of us on the ASD spectrum.

Has anyone else had direct experience with this disease (I hope not).

I had a 35 pound losing bout of colitis in my early 30's. 24 years later it's "under control" but the good dump people talk about I just don't have. Gastro said a virus or stress was the cause. Even then I knew it was stress. Now I have a very very strong suspicion it's stress caused by peoples reaction to my "traits"

Get ready for a really bland diet. I never get my money's worth at restaurants because I have everything completely plain, no add-ons. It's better then 20 years ago but I still have to say my order 3 or 4 times and am always sending things back plenty of times.

I hope fewer posts means fewer ulcerative colitis/Crohn's Disease sufferers. YEA!

But just in case there may be people ashamed of their condition I offer the book that was able to help me into long time remission:

Breaking the Vicious Cycle (Intestinal health through diet) by Elaine Gottschall B.A., M.Sc. The Kirkton Press; copyright 1994; ISBN0-9692768-1-8

This author provides the most bland diet I've ever seen. This leads to identification of problem foods.

The author also describes how you can create substitute food items to replace removed items.

This was a real lifesaver for me.
