Why is masturbation considered to be a "grave sin"?

Regarding Onan, his crime can be considered masturbation in the sense that he used his wife for a "Fleshlight" and that's just dehumanizing. Then he jizzes all over the floor. If there were people whom it would be nice to nuke from heaven, this guy qualifies. "Oh, people do a lot worse!" Yes, and we don't know what else Onan did.

Regarding who wants to have ten kids? Well, I've seen people quite happy to have three or four, and then other people who have ten (that particular family, I think, is fixing to have No. 11 in a few days) and some people are just fond of children. I think a lot of people are not able to handle the lifestyle. Other people are happy in the smugness of luxurious first-world living. Just because I don't want to own a smart phone doesn't mean they aren't awesome. And just because some folks don't want ten kids doesn't mean ten kids is a bad family size.

People marrying at 12-14: yeah, it's kind of gross, actually. Just because it's in the Bible doesn't mean it's a good thing. For example, there's a lot of slavery, rapes, murders, suicides, arson, vandalism, disembowelments--even a very long narrative of the torture and death of the Son of God. Pretty weird stuff. People tend to justify their own weird stuff because it's in the Bible, but that doesn't mean it's not weird stuff.

I kind of think all history books reflect the thoughts of the time they cover. It's nice--they don't ask you to believe in it, just say "this is how it was."

There are a lot of questions in here and I had a rough day so I don't have the energy to answer all of them, but honestly guys and gals, there are about zero things in here from anyone who's seen anything other than Protestantism. Which (I think) is a ghastly parody of Christianity in most cases, though I am biased from growing up in the American South among the Evangelicals. I like their moxie but they're kind of short on sense when it comes to the brain side of it.

It was Onan’s dead brother’s wife that he was commanded to sleep with so she would bear children. By pulling out, he was not filling that commandment. Reread the account in Genesis.

On a different note, most people are not going to want 10 kids. It’d be unfortunate to be brought up in a religion that was anti-birth control.

I thought I’d want a few kids but one was definitely enough. I couldn’t have handled more and kept my sanity.

Catholicism and Protestantism aren’t all that different from an intellectual standpoint. Certainly, not as different as some would suggest.

Well, I wasn't really worrying about why Onan was screwing her in the first place; I just said his crime could be "considered" masturbation. It's more of a linguistics thing (why did the English language use his name for this?) and not some question of Christianity.

It's not unfortunate to be brought up in a religion that's anti-contraceptives. Most of the world was like that until the Anglicans held the Lambeth Conference of 1930 and decided to go with the flow of societal pressure. What's unfortunate is the fact that "birth control" is a lame euphemism for "birth prevention."

Catholicism is the opposite of Protestantism. For starters--Catholicism is monolithic. There are different rites but we all believe the same thing. Protestant denominations are separate churches and hold, in many cases, separate doctrines. Unitarians are vocal supporters of homosexuals and Southern Baptists are not. Catholics don't believe in "Rapture." We don't have a problem with vaccinating our kids, which is good, because some of us have big families and probably could re-start the Black Plague or some nasty mess if we weren't careful. Protestants often believe all religions are the same, that fasting is harmful, that beating your wife approaches the level of a sacrament. Catholics--well, we think we're the one true faith, we fast with varying degrees of severity and do OK, and we think domestic violence is domestic violence, not some Bible-based hogwash.

There have been too many fights throughout the centuries for anyone to think the Protestants and the Catholics were the same. Irish unpleasantness between the White and the Orange is known the world over.

Wrong Planet isn't really a great place to look for religion trivia, though, and I'm sorry to say that I couldn't guarantee the local parish church to be a good place to look either. It's easy to get discouraged.

Oh, and Twi--I've seen where you mentioned your one kid several times. You sound like you did a good job as a mother. Mothering on the spectrum is probably tougher than for the rest of everybody, so more power to you.

Now I got to go to bed. I am up way too late, as usual.

On the show Moral Orel there was a rhythm to remember it by

Quote:
Number one, gold like God made the sun
Number two, Good Lord help me go poo
Number three, the Devil sets my sperm free

Sexually frustrated people are easier for the Church to control and manipulate.

Don't want to get involved in this thread but would like to say that the verb in hebrew for masturbation is le-onen. It is forbidden for religious jews also.

Jesus' own words on adultery...

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery'.  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." -- Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV)

In men, at least, some masturbation occurs with the visual stimulation of pornography featuring naked women in provocative poses and/or engaged in sexual activity.  The subsequent lust and auto-erotic activity (e.g., "masturbation") are thus adulterous.

This is in addition to previous laws given by G-D, including:

"You shall not commit adultery." -- Deuteronomy 5:18 (NIV)

"You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." -- Deuteronomy 5:21 (NIV)

Committing adultery and desiring someone who belongs to someone else are both sins.

Finally, James (the mortal half-brother of Jesus) wrote these words:

"Whoever keeps the whole Law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it." -- James 2:10 (NIV)

Thus, one self-induced ejaculation or orgasm is as much of a sin as robbing a bank and/or shooting someone dead.

Don't see how you can compare it to murder. It doesn't generally involve harming anyone.

The comparison is not mine, it is Biblical.

The actual crime committed by Onan seems to have been withdrawing during intercourse with the lady, and not masturbation. God punished Onan. So he paid a substantial penalty for early withdrawal!

God wanted him to knock up his deceased brother's wife. But he poured his "baby batter" onto the ground instead of putting it into the oven.

It’s always a good idea to be precise when engaging in a Biblical debate because understanding the situation will help you understand the other side of the argument.

The vast majority of Protestants believe in vaccinating their kids. The vast majority are against domestic violence.

Various denominations believe that theirs is the sole path to Truth and salvation.

Depending on the denomination, it can be quite similar to Catholicism. They all believe in Jesus, Heaven, following the NT, etc. There are more similarities than differences when it comes to Christian sects (with some notable exceptions here and there - like the Westboro Baptist folks who nobody likes).

Protestants don’t typically have a leader who wears fancy costumes with glitter and rhinestones.

Maybe they should. I’m voting for Elton John.

Parenting is difficult whether one is on the Spectrum or not.

That sperm could’ve been used to make a baby (now it can’t be). Since it wasn’t, it’s equivalent to murder.

I can sort of understand it if I squint my eyes really hard.

"Onanism" by itself is not a sin, but when Onan committed it, he went against G-D's will for that particular moment and thus suffered the consequences.

I wish more people would actually read the data they cite.

This is how many "christians" try to justify their hatred of contraception -- the deaths of countless sperm cells and one ova every month is somehow sinful because all of those potential babies are dying.

Don't they realize that only one sperm cell gets to merge with the ova?  Don't they understand that for every baby being born, millions and millions of sperm cells must die?

It always amazes me how clueless my mom is when it comes to how male sexuality works because she's been indoctrinated by the church. She thinks masturbation involves punching myself.

I’m not sure why people aren’t reading the account in the Bible. When I want to answer a Bible-related question, I go to the source.

You type in the Bible book, chapter, and verses into the search engine, click on the translation you want to use, and then read it. It took about 30 seconds to read these few scriptures.

Sometimes if I don’t know where a scripture is, I type in a phrase (like, maybe, “Onan spilling seed”) and what I’m looking for comes up immediately.

It’s so easy these days.
