On top of a gas kitchen stove.

Those heavy black iron things that hold the skillet above the flame. What do you call those things?

I call it a grate, but there may be a better term.

i call them grates too.

When I google "grates on a gas range" that word works - sends me to the right places (to get instruction on how to clean the darn things).

Google and electronic searches don't work that well when one can't remember a word. Happens to me rather more frequently than I'd like to admit.
