We always read about ourselves as aspies as victims. Perhaps, we were given a gift? I wish I could post a site. Unfortunately, my computer has a viris and I am reduced to using my tablet. I'll go to the library and eventually post the site. Until then google," gifted Asperger's ".

Historically aspies have been more creative, loyal and moral then the general population.

Of course we're gifted. My gift is verbal - I can write extremely well and I'm a bookaholic. I have a high IQ - most aspies do.

We're just configured differently. "Normal" people with high verbal scores will have high shapes scores. But not me. I have high verbals, and low shapes.

Damaged? How insulting. There's nothing damaged about Asperger's. Different, yes. But only different. What we have to do is build some kind of bridge - not just for us but I hope the ADHDs and so on - so we can mingle with "normals" and they won't be upset if we don't look them in the eye, for example.

If you're waiting for science to catch up with the truth, you'll wait a very long time.

Wittgenstein made the claim, therefor the burden to provide evidence to support his claim rests solely upon him.

Wittgenstein again! My most respected writers and other people lean heavily on Wittgenstein but I can't make a dent in his philosophy. Can you refer me to W for Morons or some such other helpful tome?

Ironically, Wittgenstein is considered by many to have been an aspie. (google,"wittgenstein Asperger's ). Unfortunately, I am using a tablet and cannot post sites. However, I will post sites that show that aspies (on average) are more creative, loyal and moral then the "normal" population, when I go to the library.
As for what Wittgenstein said, a lot to talk about! Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy (google it,its online) has agreat article on Wittgenstein.

DVCal, might I ask what motivates you to damage the self-esteem of the Autistics who don't go through life considering themselves to be "damaged goods"? Jealousy?

As I have told you in the past, your "damaged goods" analogy is fundamentally wrong. Autistic people are born Autistic, and "damage" implies that something was once "better" than it currently is, which in turn, suggests that Autistics are flawed in comparison to Neurotypicals, and none of these are true.

This is the truth that I accept: I am not "damaged", only different. I was officially diagnosed at age 52, AFTER having earned an MSEE degree, getting married, fathering children, serving in the military, and holding down a job for more than a quarter of a century. If this is being "damaged" then there are millions of similarly "damaged" people leading healthy, normal, and productive lives. I have many more productive years ahead of me.

Believing that you are damaged only allows you the comfort of having something to complain about without imposing upon you the discomfort of having to change.

I've got a fairly respectable cv too. But it was agony the whole way. I pretended to be normal. It was worse because there is absolutely nothing wrong with anybody in our family and that's that. If we had investigated ... ? Now, I know I'm different. I'm finding out what is different and how to work with that to allow "normals" to enjoy my company and let me enjoy theirs. It's been a very rough road. I have to sympathize with people who don't feel privileged. Even though my verbal scores are privileged.

I was never trained to smile when others smile and it certainly isn't reflex. And I can't recognize faces so I walk right past people I should greet. I lose friends almost faster than I make them. Now I have a white cane, so people will maybe guess why recognition isn't happening.

Spring is coming and I'm afraid. No kidding. In the winter, there's nobody out there. I can walk my dog in peace. But now all the friendly people will be back and - even with the coping mechanisms I've worked on - oh how I wish I could be invisible!

It's just not all bad or all good. But sometimes it feels like it.
