there was a time when the phrase "mentally ret*d" was considered a gentler way of describing folks with major cognitive developmental deficits.

I'm at a point where I don't care about hearing other people use "ret*d", as long as they're not actively comparing someone to people with developmental disabilities (ex. "you're acting like a ret*d").

It's essentially synonymous with "stupid"/"absurd" at this point (ex. "that's ret*d") to certain people, and that usage is definitely not going to go away any time soon. I've learned to not even notice it, but I understand why it still upsets other people.

it is an ad hominem and thus not cool. i won't even use it to describe the appropriateness or wisdom of opinions. but i will use the term "backwards" or "atavistic" or such.

Instant slur - just add any group to the suffix "tard"

we need an equivalent slur to those who would call us any kinda "tard" - i propose calling those folks "the poorly wiped."

The thing that bothers me with most of these insults is not just you are disparaging the target, you are also claiming the superiority for making the judgement. I have found very little evidence to support the superiority.

Except those who choose to use the word are advertising they aren't.

It's awful. It's better to say, "mental retardation", or "Down's Syndrome". I don't like "challenged" because that's negative.

People with mental retardation get so much more love and support than people with ASD. Unfortunately they don't have very long life expectancies. They get jobs, and some even get married and have children.
