Not again.... Autism Speaks and Nascar

For the second year in a row, Autism Speaks will be partially sponsoring the June NASCAR race at Dover. It will be known as - the "Best Buy 400 benefiting Student Clubs for Autism Speaks." And apparently there are a bunch of auctions as well to benefit Autism Speaks, such as:
They can purchase tickets to Grammy-nominated country group Emerson Drive's May 31 concert at 8 p.m. at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. Tickets are on sale and are priced from $25 to $35. They are available at (800) 711-5882 or www.doverdowns.com.

• The chance to bid on giving the Sprint Cup drivers the command to "Start your engines!" prior to the June 1 race at Dover.

There are numerous other prizes that fans can bid on, including the chance to be on stage for driver introductions; an autographed flag signed by the starting lineup of the Sprint Cup race; a ride in the prerace parade lap for two guests; four tickets to watch the race from a skybox suite; four pit passes; a guided tour for four of the Sprint Cup garage; and the chance to play golf in the May 29 Drive for Autism Celebrity-Am Golf Outing with drivers and other sports celebrities.


They did this last year too, except they were partnered with Visa. This is ridiculous. How can such a group be allowed to sponsor this race? I say WrongPlanet should sponsor some race.

At the risk of being called an liberal elitest (I probably am), I think they have targeted the right audiance for their emotion driven campaign.

Money talks.

I think it makes perfect sense. A bunch of dumbasses running around in circles trying to find a cure for autism.

That's exactly what they all are.

Only two of the NASCAR drivers actually support Autism Speaks. One of them is my favorite American race car driver, Elliott Sadler.

Just because I disagree with his stance, doesn't mean he's a dumbass. Or any of the others, for that matter.

Left turns ftw! But I agree with beau99 in that people tend not to, and in some cases cannot thoroughly research everything they claim to support.

yup if you lisen to the new it's all about the god forsaken ecomany. i would genuanlly laugh at the govementsand banksfaces if it failed. mainly cause when ever a crisis comes along the ecmonay comes first.

Okay, this time I gotta acknowledge that my critic is entirely correct. Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever made a post I regretted more. It's been bothering me, so I want to retract it and apologize to those I've offended and offend some other people instead.

I'm not sure how I managed to say so much that was wrong in a two sentence post. The second sentence wasn't even a sentence. Guess I just couldn't resist the perfect straight line; an announcement on Wrong Planet that Autism Speaks was sponsoring a NASCAR race.

So anyway, I don't like car racing because I don't like noisy machines. I'm not an absolute Luddite, but I come pretty close. I don't like cooked carrots either, but that doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with them.

There's a lot of things in this world I don't understand. I can't understand why somebody would want to watch a NASCAR race, or why somebody would like one race car driver better than another, or for that matter, why somebody would like one football team better than another.

I'm not being a snob here, since I also can't understand why somebody would like one classical music composer better than another, or one orchestra better than another. To me, that stuff all sounds the same.

But anybody who gets to be among the best in anything has a mastery of it as an art form. There's thousands of people who would love to take their place, but they aren't able too.

It's difficult to imagine, but I suppose there may even be people who can't understand why I would like one poet better than another, or one Chinese calligrapher better than another, since superficially they're all doing the same thing.

So it clearly isn't accurate to say that NASCAR drivers and fans are dumbasses. More generally, it also isn't accurate to say that rednecks are dumbasses. Anybody who thinks rednecks are dumb shouldn't have any problem at all figuring out how to fix the transmission on their own car, and when they get done with that they can figure out how to build their own house.

Okay, this is an issue with me because I've had a lot more success at being an aspie redneck than being an aspie academic. Being a successful academic means you gotta be able to sound intelligent. Being a successful redneck means you gotta be able to do something intelligently in an arena where your ability to make an impression is irrelevant. Lot of the time, anyway.

Beyond this, I don't think I should be putting somebody down for being a dumbass even if they are a dumbass. Ridiculing somebody because their brain doesn't work very well is no different than ridiculing somebody because the muscles in their legs don't work very well.

The only exception I'd make is feminists, who invariably force their stupidity down other people's throats and use it as a justification for making innocent people suffer.

I also ain't all that outraged about Autism Speaks. I think I briefly checked out their website a while back, but I wasn't all that interested. I ain't one of those anti-cure types because my life as an aspie totally sucks. I don't see how it's even theoretically possible to cure something like asperger's, but if somebody figures out how, I hope they sign me up.

Sure, asperger's is an essential part of what I am, but what I am ain't all that great. I think all those people celebrating their neurodiversological uniqueness are country club aspies whose lives don't have much in common with those of us in the trailer park.

I guess I could do a Jeff Foxworthy definition of a country club aspie:

You might be a country club aspie if...

...you get laid more often than your carpet.

...going to the grocery store is not the highlight of your social life.

...somebody asked your opinion about something during the previous year.

...you ever have an intimate relationship with somebody that has more than two dimensions.

I'm not sure what asperger's activism is going to accomplish anyway. It's not like I need somebody to build me a wheelchair ramp. I guess they could pass a law requiring some lady to be my girlfriend. I imagine there's somebody out there who would join me for a cup of coffee or a movie if the alternative was a prison sentence.

They'd need to modify the gun laws too, so I could hold somebody at gunpoint and force them to have a conversation with me.

The reason why i love NASCAR is my parents are into it and i have a cousin who is a auto racer, and he's smart, and he's an architect. Not every NASCAR fan is a Redneck, some are very smart and are good people.

Also i can understand that you don't like noisy engines, I love noisy engine's Like A big block V8 or a V12 from a ferarri, etc. I don't like high pitched nosies like some whiny singing, and i can't stand babies crying. I makes me very upset and tense.

Oh by the way as for the coffee thing. How bout i take you to panera, get you an I.C. spice and bacon turkey bravo?
