I believe certain sports are overrated and certain sports are underrated. For example, football I'd say is overrated. I don't really like football, and find rugby much more exciting to watch. But then a sport like, say, Olympic style weightlifting, gets about ZERO coverage in USA, and the people doing it are about the strongest people that walk the earth. But apparently Americans find it boring. And football for the most part steals any Olympic lifting talent in USA so people can pummel eachother over a football. I find it quite weird what sports are really appreciated here, and what sports aren't. Also, we seem to hate individual sports, and only like national team sports. Another weird thing to me is America seemingly has no national pride. The only international events we watch are the Olympics. But world championships in any sport will barely be on TV here.

Also, it seems like on the world stage, when America finds itself losing in any sport, we just give up and/or call the rest of the world cheaters. We did this in motorcycle racing, Harley Davidson couldn't/wouldn't make a competitive sportbike, so they just quit racing. So America was totally off the world stage in motorcycle racing. We did this with Olympic lifting, too, once Europe recovered from World War II, and started using smarter training methods than us, we simply quit trying at it.

I mean, sports are pointless, but so is everything else, really. Video games are pointless. Music is pointless. Movies are pointless. Art is pointless. But, they make people happy, same with sports.

They're a great leisure activity. My main problem with sports is that the athletes are paid way too much money. No one deserves that much money unless they're risking their lives to save people from burning buildings.

The current 24/7 utter obsession with it in American culture is not healthy. For every minute of actual sports, it seems like there are 12 hours of people talking about it.

While participation in sporting events may not be over-rated, what has become over-rated (imo) is the cult of spectatorship in the world of professional sports, especially when every pro football game seems to be a repeat of every other pro football game, with the only differences being the uniforms and the final scores (again, imo).

I don't understand people that are super obsessed fans/spectators of a certain team. Or just ones that watch sports constantly in general. Casual sports fans are okay though.

The main annoying aspect of it is how the games usually last for several hours. :coffee:

At least video games are an interactive non-passive form of entertainment unlike listening to music, or watching movies/sports.

If you think music is a passive form of entertainment, you're doing it wrong. Listening to music can be very stimulating, kind of like reading a book.

Listening to music is supposed to stimulate your mind. It's not a passive activity at all. You don't just "sit there" when you read books do you? Most people think about what they're reading, just like most people think about what they're listening to.

I think the Major sports, Football & American football are absolutely overrated.

While sports like Hurling, Gaelic football, Rugby ect aren't popular enough.

On the otherhand, I think taking part in Sports isn't encouraged enough, don't make up excuses you're either healthy and fit or just lazy.

Double post but just to make my point.

In the gym I went to before I started this night job, There was a guy in a wheel chair who still went to the gym 4 days a week to weight lift. So seriously, don't bother with excuses.

While I agree that the whole hype that is made about especially Football (Soccer) is too much, and the billions and billions that get moved around in these circles for player transfers, price moneys and trainer fees have just gotten absolutely ridicilous, it is interesting to note that you call these two "the two major sports". Because, just as a fun fact, Football (Soccer) is the single most practiced sport in the world, and it gets the most attention and media coverage in the whole world. Alas, the SECOND most practiced sport in the world is almost nonexistant on TV, and you cannot make a living of it: Judo. It is quite interesting that the amount of pracitioners of a sport doesn't necessarily translate into the amount of hype that is made about it.
