If it's true though, that nicotine can be used medicinally for autism, hopefully it wouldn't need to be for life? E-cigs aren't so good for the lungs either.

Yes Shakti, nicotine can be beneficial for both people with autism and AD(H)D.

There are nicotine mint tabs (1mg and 2mgnicotine per tab) that dissolve slowly in your mouth (between gums and cheeck), maybe you could try these instead of e-cigarettes. They are available at your local pharmacy.
