I am wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with both classic autism and schizophrenia (as in, the psych or doctor said you had both without invalidating the first diagnosis)? Is this possible to get diagnosed with both, or does one automatically exclude the other?

***EDIT: So, I just did some research on my own, and found this in the dsm-iv criteria for schizophrenia:

Relationship to a pervasive developmental disorder: If there is a history of autistic disorder or another pervasive developmental disorder, the additional diagnosis of schizophrenia is made only if prominent delusions or hallucinations are also present for at least a month (or less if successfully treated).

Should I take this to mean that if the symptoms of schizophrenia seem VERY mild, then they are likely the result of autism instead?

I am still interested to know if anyone has been diagnosed with both though! :D

You might find something helpful in one of the other subforums. There have been a few threads on autism and schizophrenia in General Autism issues recently.

Schizophrenia is generally more illogical and fantasy based. They see things and hear voices a lot of the time. If a person has these things I would say they have a bigger problem than ASD.

I have been diagnosed with simotanious autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders but not classic autism and schizophrenia at the same time. Ive gotten the following combinations diagnosed though.

Aspergers/Schizoaffective (most common)
Aspergers/Schizophrenia
Aspergers/Schizotypal
Autism/Schizoaffective
PDD-NOS/Schizoaffective
PDD-NOS/Schizotypal
PDD-NOS/Schizophrenia

Other things are usually thrown into the mix as well. Usually ADHD.
I havent gotten the classic autistic schizophrenic diagnosis before though.

I have been diagnosed with both classic autism and schizoaffective disorder. There are times where the autism is worse and others when the schizoaffective is more of a problem. I have the bipolar type but 99% depressive episodes. Very rarely mania or hypomania. I have moderate high functioning autism. There is one doctor at the hospital that never believed I was autistic until recently when I rocked back and forth constantly due to the stress. The doctor has been wrong constantly with me though, downplaying all my experiences including the schizoaffective disorder as well as the autism. All my other doctors haven't been downplaying as much as he did. I hope if I have to go to the insane asylum again, I don't see this idiot. At one time I was diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder as well. I am just weird.

Wow, any ideas why they keep changing things so frequently? That must be frustrating?....

I would imagine they change frequently because its hard for doctors to pinpoint where someone is on the spectrum.
Psychriactic lables are just things people made up to lable the symptoms someone is having so two doctors rarely call it the same thing.
Schizoaffective is Schizophrenia with an Affective Disorder such as Bipolar for example.

The difference between schizophrenia and schizoaffective (link)

Basically, schizoaffective includes mood symptoms and schizophrenia does not, and schizophrenia also needs to be present for a longer period of time to diagnose.
