I like to seek out new artists - so while my peers are still listening to artists who were around when we were in high school & college ('70s & '80s), I find myself listening mostly to artists who have emerged in the last ten years. I don't know how that relates to my being on the Spectrum. It is probably more related to my continuing desire to experience new things. (Just as I continue to read new books, rather than read the same ones over & over again.)
But I also have a Special Interest in female vocalists. So even as the artists that I listen to change, I continue to look for new artists who have many of the qualities that I have always loved.
According to last.fm, most of my "neighbors" are much younger than I am.
I don't know exactly why most people get "locked in" to listening to the artists of their late teens & early twenties. I do know that people who sell pianos use music that was popular when their customer was about 18 to demo the instrument. Maybe people simply associate that music with their youth.
While I liked a lot of the music that was being recording during those years of my life, I can't say that I liked much that was "popular" at the time. And I also liked early jazz & popular music from the 1930s. A piano salesman would have a difficult time figuring out what to play for me.
For me, I don't think it simply comes down to whether or not the music I like is typical for my age. In large part, I think my musical tastes have always been atypical for any age. There is definitely an interplay between my Special Interest & my desire to experience new music.
