anyone else have the habit of playing with them instead of focusing on their art? Sometimes Ill be drawing, and just reach for the eraser and start sculpting it into different shapes and stuff.

No, I actually use them. XD They're extremely useful on watercolor paper, where normal erasers would damage the paper.

I use them to lift the lead a bit, help with shading. As well as for erasing in tiny delicate areas.

Drives me nuts when I get little carpet fibers/eyelashes stuck in them.

When working with dry media like graphite, pastel or charcoal they are extremely useful tools for shaping worked areas. They also are good at lifting lint and small scraps of material and can be used to temporarily tack paper to the wall.

i am such a freakishly messy person and they are amazingtastical with charcoal. they are also responsible for me procrastinating. i like to pull them apart until they become all foamy.
