I'd love to know what everybody finds relaxing or inspiring.

This one I've just found is a little of both for me.

Those are nice. I've just noticed that one song by Enya is also the name of the horse from the Legend of Zelda.

This song gets me inspired because I like to sit back and imagine certain scenarios when listening to this song or if I ever made a film. I dunno why but this song fits in really well with the story of that Mark Haddon book, I imagine Christopher walking through the street at night or on the train journey to London. Not only the words but the sound of the music would just go great as a soundtrack to that novel if it ever got adapted into a film.

This is always the song I'm listening to when relaxing and having romantic daydreams.

gosh, but to get the blood pumping there is nothing quite like a jazzy march or a big-band romp. or to calm down, there is nothing like ravel or debussy- composers of soothing music that "sounds" as pontillistic to the ears, as an impressionist painting appears to the eyes, music that is like a fair sunny day with a gentle ocean breeze blowing caressingly through one's hair. "girl with the flaxen hair" is one such number.

Lately, dub music's been my jam. Ambient Electronic is pretty relaxing too, check out Brian Eno or Stars of the Lid.

My favorite instrumental piece...

It's smooth jazz, but I like it...

My favorite kind of music to relax and calm my nerves is Neil Young's music, specifically his 1992 album Harvest Moon. The way the music is performed on that album seems to calm my nerves whenever I have a stressful situation. I usually listen to this album as I am driving into my exams and midterms.

I'll echo Enya, and add Vangelis as well. (I love Beethoven and SRV, too, but not for relaxing so much.)

Also, iTunes has a podcast called Dave's Lounge, which is full of downtempo music, and there's 180+ episodes, 30-60mins each, with just gobs of relaxation. I can't post the link (due to being new), but Google will take you right there.

(no, not the Dave of Dave's Lounge :) )
