Even when the ship is wrecked, I promise.

Running from my own life now
I'm really turning some time
Looking up to the sky for something I may never find

An enjoyable TOTP performance from 1973. Awesome lead vocals by Lyn Paul, totally eclipsing the more restrained Eve Graham, who left the group shortly afterwards. The only thing I don't like about this is they way they start to 'la-la-la' halfway through the song, as if they've run out of lyrics, which was a common feature of many New Seekers songs from this period.

He painted Salford's smoky tops
On cardboard boxes from the shops
And parts of Ancoats where I used to play...

Laugh if you want to, but I can get very emotional (not a frequent experience) when listening to this song. It's about the artist LS Lowry who was born in Manchester and spent his whole life there. The performance verges on caricature, but has enough authenticity and genuineness to make the grade. I can remember the girls in my primary school playground in the mid-1960s singing The Big Ship Sails On The Alley Alley Oh exactly as they do at the end of this performance.

Kevin Parrott, the guy on the left of the duo, is an interesting character who features briefly in the film Telstar (about the 1960s music producer Joe Meek), something I'm going to research more in the near future...
