Here's Tony Christie, looking like a bit of a cut-price Elvis, performing this minor hit song in front of what can only be a German audience. Christie was a Yorkshireman who came up via the working-men's clubs and briefly became a prominent figure on the British pop scene from about 1971-73. He then seems to have gone back to the club circuit. My parents went to see him perform in an obscure Manchester club circa 1975, and commented on his shabby appearance by that time.

He had a bit of a revival about 15 years ago, when one of his old songs was revived by another artist and went to the top of the charts.

Tony Christie again, performing Is This The Way To Amarillo, which was a hit for him in late 1971. The actual performance is in the BBC 'Top of the Pops' studio, but it's being shown here to a German audience via those TV monitors. Great song, actually. Who is this mysterious Maria, by the way?

Hunky Dory, great album, as were Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Not so sure about the stuff that followed those.... :?

Bowie had a hit single with Space Oddity in 1969, but his real breakthrough came with this performance on TOTP in June 1972:

....and here's the British 'comedian' Peter Kay miming to 'Amarillo' in 2005.

F*** me.

Some people get irate at the suggestion that evolution has gone into reverse over the last 30 years or so, but sometimes I wonder...I really do...

Late 1974, T Rex performing live on the Don Kirshner Rock Show in the USA. The core of the band is still intact, with Mickey Finn on congas and Steve Currie on bass, as well as Bolan, of course.

The keyboard player is Dino Dines, who had been with the Beach Boys and was only a member of T Rex for a short time, but I love his performance here. Gloria Jones is the female backing singer - many Bolan fans blame her for breaking up his marriage to June Child and his subsequent decline, and of course she was driving the car in which he was killed in 1977. I don't know...

This in my view is an excellent performance - Bolan's physical state had declined alarmingly from drink and drugs since his peak in 1971, but his guitar work is brilliantly powerful, as are his vocals, though in a somewhat raw and unorthodox style...

I'd agree that many folks are evolving backward.

Bolan's decline was very sad. I enjoy your musicology stories so keep them coming!

Sandy Denny ^. Another tragic story.
