The only two I can think of off the top of my head are Nine Inch Nails' cover of Dead Souls, by Joy Division and Celldweller's cover of Tragedy, by the Bee Gees.

I'm sure there are more out there, if I actually took time to think.

Man who sold the world by Nirvana is 1000x better than David Bowie's original and Lake of Fire also by Nirvana is 10,000x better than the lousy Meat Puppets original. Gary Jules does much better job with Mad World than Tears for Fears did, as the song has so much more emotional power in a lower cord and slower tempo.

Korn did an absolutely awesome cover of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall and Five Finger Death punch nailed Bad Company's song Bad Company. I consider these two near equals to the originals, but I still prefer the original unless I'm in that kind of mood.

Other covers better than original:
Blue Monday - Orgy
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson

Equals
Working Class Hero - Marilyn Manson and John Lennon
Knockin on Heavens Door - Guns and Roses and Bob Dylan

I prefer the pacing of the cover

Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame (cover)

Usually, I prefer the original to the cover. Covers are too often exact duplicates of the original to take advantage of the fact that most people don't check out music made before the point that they started to pay attention to music. (ie David Lee Roth's rip off of Louis Prima's "Just a Gigolo.")

This is an exception:

Cover

The cover has MORE energy and something the original simply lacks! I don't know what that something is...

This one is a little bit hard because I like both equally.

You might remember the cover from this VW ad

This. I hate the original by Nirvana.

I like Simon & Garfunkel's version but this is much better.

Talk Talk's song, not Bon Jovi's.
