Does anyone else grow out their finger nails for playing stringed instruments? I never liked using picks so instead I just let all my nails on my right hand grow long. I never really seem to find any other string instrument players doing this... except like professional classical guitarists. Sometimes I think about cutting them off but on the other hand it has taken nearly two years to get my nails to be nice thick and sturdy finger picks.

I did this when I played the guitar.
Using a pick is like petting a cat with a glove. :P I think using your fingers is part of the experience with the instrument. Plus, you have 5 picks instead of one. 8)

Yes, I used to play finger-style jazz and my guitar teacher even taught me how to clip them for maximum effect. On the neck hand, however, "as short as possible" was the goal.
