I have recently decided to learn to play the guitar, IO have no dificulty with the physical aspects of forming the chords or the strumming, but the music theory does not make sense to me at all...I keep reading "see the pattern?" my answer is NO!...It is not evident to me...I am convinced this is something I can master, but not until I understand it. Does anyone know of a method of explaing music theory in an alternate manner to what is typical? That is something more verbal and less math based?

I understand what you are going through a little bit, but how exactly do you feel?

Feel about what? I thinK I can lean to play the guitar if I can understand the theory, I think I can understnd the theory, if it it is explained in more berbal term and not so reliant on math patterns. I am seeking such instruction.

Because you don't understand the theory, how do you feel?

OK, now that Jason understands, does anyone know of such a program of instruction?

I often feel that way, but sometimes I get it later, sometimes never at all...
Could you give an example of something you don't get?

It is difficult because apparently there are patterns that repeat either an octave higher or lower but the notes and hence the chords are the same or something along those lines, but I cannot see the pattern What they seem to be sayining is a C note is a Cnote even if it sounds different because it is an octave higher or lower, but this logic defies me...I have determined that the 12th fret is important for some reason...

Like this, for instance?

Depending on where the R falls it's a G scale or E scale or whatever. Don't know if that's what you mean. I haven't been learning for long so I don't know much either.

OK you have just illustrated part of my problem the diagrams are confusing to me I know it is a guitar neck but I need to see it in words to understand what it means.

Well, for that in particular, the circles are the notes you have to play to play C-D-E-F-G-A-B, on different parts of the guitar neck.

I usually see it better as a diagram, but sometimes I write it again with the notes' names or the number of fret.
