Portishead has been described by some as "Trip-Hop." Other groups in this genre include Massive Attack and Life In Mono. I don't understand what would make one call it "weird", other than it isn't Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, fill in the blank artist-that's-popular-this-fifteen-minutes. For weirder stuff, try digging a little deeper:

Primus
The Mothers Of Invention
Captain Beefheart
Azam Ali
Dead Can Dance
Nils Petter Molvaer

Does anybody else find that they feel sometimes that music in any form is plain weird?
Or, that no music is weird? That music is only weird when it is what you are unfamiliar with?

Well when I say weird that is usually not a bad thing...technically I should have used the term 'trippy' I guess because I find Portishead's music quite trippy.

Also I like Primus but have never heard the others.

well my last response to another post kind of went over this.......but I am quite familier with 'weird' music, its my favorite.

as in when I created this thread I was not criticizing weird music just wanted to see if anyone else liked rather unusual music.

Oh, weird music is my favorite, although I often lump it in with psychedelic. Although I feel like my definition of weird is way farther out than a lot of stuff I've seen on this thread.

Gay Beast (i was audio engineer for this release)

Quad Muth (gets fun around :45)

Lightning Bolt

Men's recovery Project

The Monks (check the guitar "solo" @ 1:15)

Captain Beefheart

...ok you get the idea

[edit: fixed the Monks' link]

More music in the "trip-hop" genre.

They're actually quite well known in a lot of non-English-speaking European countries.

Portishead are quite rated among alterna fans, makes them not genuinely 'weird' to me. Should try to listen to them again, though.

I see pop music like that and when people end up dancing on it, it gets worse...
