My favorite two from The Smiths (if I had to narrow it down that much, I love every one I have on my iPod) are Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. The first because it contains one of my favorite lyrics of any song ("Why do I smile at people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?"), and the latter because it sums up perfectly how it feels to wake up from a dream like that.

My favorite three from Morrissey solo are all from the album Ringleader Of The Tormentors: You Have Killed Me, To Me You Are A Work Of Art, and I Just Want To See The Boy Happy. The first two are crush-related (as hokey as it feels to say that), and the latter I like because it seems a little more frustrated/angry than defeated like most of his other songs.

How soon is now? because it has an amazing stereo guitar effect, is over 6m long and sounds even more punchy and pounding live.

Definitely. No idea how that slipped my mind, it's fantastic.

Can't decide. I'll try to remember my recent live favourites:

Alma Matters
You Have Killed Me
Shoplifters of the World Unite
One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell
I Know It's Over
Let Me Kiss You
I Will See You In Far Off Places
Meat Is Murder
Every Day Is Like Sunday

Wish I could remember more, but I was in love with the entire set, anyway!

Asleep and Unloveable but also a bunch of other songs.

Asleep
Rusholme Ruffians (particularly the version on RANK that has a fab Elvis intro)
I Know It's Over
Still Ill
The Queen is Dead
Lot of solo tracks

These are some standouts but, really, the list would be rather long. It may be easier to names the few songs I did not like (e.g. "Jeane"). Regardless, for aspies of a certain range of age, I cannot imagine how Morrissey could not resonate. His way of expressing alienation and cynicism with a dash of dark humor is incredible. He's our Elvis. I hope his health improves and we get to see a tour again with out cancellations (he recently postponed shows three times in Chicago and finally just cancelled).

Rhythm-wise, "Bigmouth Strikes Again" is my favorite Smiths song.

Lyrics-wise, I love "Panic" and got the 12 inch single when it came out, which had no remixes or extended versions, and was just the radio version printed on 12 inch 45 rpm vinyl oddly enough.. Anyway I would play "Panic" at the end of a long nights gig, when I just wanted everyone to hurry up leave the dance floor, so we could all clean up and go home, but they wouldn't leave.. So playing this made everyone leave LOL!.. But I was happy because I loved the song. I have the last phrase of "Panic" still stuck in my head.

Burn down the Disco
Hang the bloody DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
It says nothing to me about my life
Hang the bloody DJ
Because the music they constantly play
On the Leed side streets that you slip down
The provincial towns you jog around
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ

My favourite Smiths/Morrissey song is the one with the beautiful guitars and clever, vaguely homoerotic lyrics. :P

Ah, yes. I know just which one you mean. :D

Actually I love How Soon Is Now. Here's a weird thing. I can't remember the names of most of the ones I like.

"What She Said"--is that the name of it? "what she said...I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death..."

"Rubber Ring" --"I'm holding the torch in the corner of your room. Can you hear me? And when you're dancing and laughing and finally living, hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly..." Ooh, now i've got goosebumps.

I think I could actually play this if I had a drum kit! :D

My real favourite:

Rubber Ring is also very clever - a song for people who've grown out of the band's music.

But that means I was always too old....? Even when I was only 21?

Ah, you mean the one with Morrissey dolefully crooning? That is an excellent one.

This Charming Man
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
This Night Has Opened My Eyes

These are the ones I end up singing to myself the most.

I've never been able to get THAT into The Smiths/Morrissey, but I do love those two songs. Some others I like include "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Girlfriend In A Coma", "The More You Ignore Me...", and "That's How People Grow Up".

Death of a Disco Dancer and Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me (the opening piano chords are fantastic).

This Charming Man, The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, and Unloveable are also favorites.
