I know I'll get a lot of backlash for starting this thread, but even though I don't get along very well with the pastor of my church, I want to buy him a surprise present for the upcoming anniversary of his ordination. He told me once that he's a fan of classic sci-fi novels, but did not specify who his favorite authors are.

Can anyone provide recommendations?

Dune is the gold standard.
If he doesn't mind antiquated science, go with E.E. Doc Smith's Lens Men series, which spawned concepts such as the so called space opera, and tractor beams.
