well for me my favorite guitarists just so hapen to be some of the worst guitarists ever speaking in terms of actual skill but i love theses three chord wonders :D

1.Johnny Ramone - Ramones (durr). Type - Rhythm and a tiny bit of lead. Guitar - Mosrite Ventures MK2 (dream guitar)
2. Michael 'Olga' Algar - Toy Dolls. Type - Rhythm and Lead. Guitar - Fender Telecaster
3. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana (durr). Type - Lead and some rhythm. Guitar - Mosrite Gospel Mk5
4. Fred "sonic" smith - MC5. Type - Rhythm. Guitar - Mosrite Ventures MK2
5. Kevin 'Noodles' Wasserman - Offspring. Type - Lead. Guitar - Ibanez
6. Wayne Kramer - MC5. Type - Lead. Guitar - Fender Stratocaster
7. Joe Strummer (John Graham Mellor) - Clash (durr). Type - Rhythm. Guitar - Les Paul

it mght just be a coincidence but i liked Johnny Ramone, Kurt Cobain and Fred "sonic" smith before i found out the all played pretty much the same guitar.

favorite guitarists?

1. kendall jones - fishbone - his ska and funk stuff is amazing....his metal stuff is even more amazing....that he went to his dad's religious cult....it just says to me a lost soul who grabbed to the wrong thing in looking for a greater definition in life......

2. john lennon - the beatles - he finds himself constantly limited by the fact that he is THE beatle other than paul and yet he finds ways to rise above this while still not alienating his fan-base.....it's truly a shame we lost him.

3. jimi hendrix - THE originator of electric blues...many called it alien blues...but i'd reserve that title for buckethead.....i think jimi did something more important....he brought blues into the electric age and made blues songs that are timeless and stand to be something to be learned and understood....much like robert johnson was before him.

4. andy partridge - XTC - this isn't as obvious of a choice but still not obscure....andy was an amazing songwriter and his use of the guitar for expression is truly heroic and redefines the instrument those who are ignorant of XTC are those truly lacking in life.

5. jerry cantrell - Alice in Chains - gotta bring it home with a fellow american. while many consider the 90s a time of dead guitar heroes......a time when metal and shred were "dead" by this current group.....jerry cantrell wrote songs that stand the test of time and played guitar solos that are equally as timeless. f**k every guitar officiando that says guitar playing was dead in the 90s....you jackasses were too caught up in the technique to appreciate the amazing vocabulary used by cantrell in his playing and songwriting.

Zacky Vengence
Claudio Sanchez
Travis Stever
Jade Puget

I find it blasphemy that Tom Morello hasn't been mentioned yet.
If we're counting bass as well, then Les Claypool must be included.

Weren't he more of a Telecaster guy (at least when with The Clash)?

Also:

James Dean Bradfield - Manic Street Preachers
Bernard Butler - Suede
Johnny Marr - The Smiths
Bernard Sumner - Joy Division/New Order

Uhm, I don't know much about guitar-playing really...

Three more which I can't believe I forgot:

- David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd)

- Matt Pike (of Sleep, High on Fire)

- Michael Cashmore (of Current 93, Nature & Organisation, etc) - The acoustic guitar / composer genius behind much of Current 93's most beautiful melancholy music.
