As the title says, post pictures here of the work from your favorite visual artists (painters, photographers, illustrators, etc).


I'll start:

I've never been too sure what to do with visual art; what to take from it, how to 'get' it. Music and writing and films move along in/with time. But still visual art is static. I mean here photography and drawing/painting. I don't think I've ever seen a sculpture that, for me, was worth the effort. Unless we count the systems of electric pylons and telegraph poles. Which we probably don't.

Round about '08, this question really started to bug me. Because I didn't know what to do with art, what I was supposed to be looking at, I thought I just wasn't a particularly 'visual' person, and then I wondered what such a thing even meant. And then I came upon this picture:



And something 'clicked'. I got it, or perhaps it got me. I went looking at more of his work, and was really taken with the windows - I haven't seen anyone else with windows like Ed Hopper's - and the light and the loneliness and the stories. Hence my username.

Yes, I understand that feeling. I'd say the majority of art out there, does nothing for me, but I still find I'm enamored with a lot of artist's work. In order for me to love a picture, it has to pull me in and make me feel something/make me think. I agree, that I don't think a sculpture has ever done this for me. So I will often spend hours searching for new artists that meet my exceptionally high standards. Todd Baxter, the photographer I posted above, absolutely astounded me when I saw his work from the series with the camp kids. I am not easily captivated by photography that way, and his scenes filled me with wonder.

I see what you mean about the windows, they're fantastic! I have seen some his paintings before, but the first one your posted really made me notice his work. And I love how he was able to convey her expression without a very detailed face.

This is Roger Dean, isn't it? Stumbled across his work recently (thank you, Juxtapoz) - his landscapes have such movement, and fantastical shapes. It's wonderful.

Still quite fond of István Orosz's work - it's a trip, and a delightful exercise in extreme proportions. By far one of my favorite artists, though, is Corey Best:

Water Pelicans by Michelle Morin

Vaguely reminiscent of U-Ram Choe's work - delicately wrought from metals and acrylic, but he goes a step further into animating his sculptures. Enchanting (and often bizarre) stuff.
