Some people are picky about music because they are snobs. Some think that because they listen to unusual music they are more sophisticated than others. Is this what you mean?

FYI, I actually like more unusual music. I don't care at all what other people listen to.

I hardly own any music right now. Like many other's here, for a long time I only enjoyed video game music or music from motion picture scores. I now prefer instrumental "post rock" and certain types of ambient/electronic music.

yeah I guess. my opinion is probably bias because in nz every social trend/scene has their own type of music and they all listen to(I'm sure it happens everywhere) the same bands/artists and think they're musicially elite by listening to interpol ect or whatever stuff is mainsteam but kinda not at the same time.lol.

I guess “unusual” can be misinterpreted. GYBE is not that obscure, but I would call it unusual because there aren’t many other “rock” bands that play that kind of music. It’s closer to the instrumental music you would hear in a movie or video game score than traditional rock music. I was just wondering if it’s a common aspie/autism trait to like instrumental music that doesn’t have the normal pop “hooks”.

I’ve also been looking online for dissonant ambient stuff but haven’t bought anything. I’ve found stuff like “Lull” and “Northaunt”. I like the atmosphere, but it’s hard to tell from the online samples if it will be too repetitive for me.

yeah. although there are a lot of gybe rip off bands that try to produce a similar sound, but I haven't heard anyone trying to imitate them sucessfully apart from mono.

From the amazon reviews I think I'll like "substrata". Desolate, yet interesting enough to keep me awake. I only wish I could find it cheaper than $28. You know a better place to buy music than Amazon?

I'm not as sure about "gates of paradise". Hard to tell with only four 30 second samples from 20 minute tracks.

Do you know stuff that sounds sort of like the first part of "static" on "skinny fists" or the last part of "providence" on F#A#oo? The quiet parts?

I think unusual taste depends on the context.

I listen to classic rock music mostly. Might be unusual for a 21 year old, might not. I don't know. Right now I've been listening to adventure game music. If that's not unusual I don't know what is.

The word “unusual” is a subjective term. If you’re using it as an opposite of “average”, you are not considering that a preference is a personal thing. People might gauge what music I prefer if they snooped around my audio players, but I doubt that I would let that happen.

I don’t even know what is considered to be “mainstream” music. I know what I prefer, and I don’t particularly pay attention to what other people prefer.

I could make a list of music that I don’t like, but I'd rather just ignore it.

i need (to counterbalance my responsible nature) to be a little rebelious in music which gives me a rather unusual tast as a result, although i'm rather picky when it comes to rythm or voices
i like lots of different styles (involving opera, circus-music, dark electronic stuff, things from my youth like einsturzend neubauten, nick cave, but also some french balads or french rock like noir désir, belgian stuff daau, and for the rest i prefer judging song per song and not a whole style, although i don't have a lot of affinity with metal or country)

in general maybe that a nice voice and rythmic noise are recurrent in what i prefer. so that it drives me into another world in an almost unconcious state, it has a very comforting effect.
can easily say that music saved me through different periods.
