The $85 million piece was NOT "destroyed", although the frame did suffer minor damage.  The painting has been cleaned and is back on display six hours after the incident.  The perps have been arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass.  The painting is one of seven 'Sunflowers' works Van Gogh created in 1888 and 89, five of which are on display in galleries and museums across the world.

It makes me feel angry that senseless protesters have destroyed a piece of art done by one of the great artists in history. I know that protesters are an angry bunch, but art is art.

The title of this thread is misleading. As me and Fnord explained, they didn't harm the painting. In fact they didn't even try to harm it. The painting was protected by glass. The whole stunt was just symbolic.

Someone ALREADY mentioned it was protected by glass and I replied with Thank God. Please check other replies BEFORE you reply. Thank you.

At least they didn't try to pull a Lorena Bobbitt on Michelangelo's David.

As if fig leaves weren't bad enough.

I use acrylic paint and not oil paint, but it's still bad, right?

That is probably in the, "well, it kinda depends", category.

Rather than issue a value judgement I'll give some information about the science, which may perhaps be used to form a judgement ...
