It is difficult to compare.

Bernard Sumner lacks the byronic hero appeal of Ian Curtis, but made a more successful popstar (if this is an achievement).

Ian had the better peculiar little Manchunian dance.

New Order had superior music, for Blue Monday alone, but Ian's lyrics are unbeatable.

Favourite Joy D lyric from 'Isolation':
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else

Two years ago I was obsessed with Joy Division. They were were one of the only bands that I would consistently listen to on my CD Player. Last year I got into New Order. They took me longer to get into than Joy Division, but I like them just as much as Joy Division, only in different ways.

Is that Ian Curtis in your avatar? And is your nickname "atmosphere" named after the Joy Division song title?

You can't really compare. They're two very different styles of music. The question is, which genre do you prefer? And, as emo as I am now: Joy Division. But that might very well have changed tomorrow.

Well I prefer Glassjaw to Ashlee Simpson, but I wouldn't mention either of them in this poll either...

I pick Joy Division, Ian Curtis is an idol of mine, and the way Joy Division made their music as far as writing and production (I'd say Martin Hannett counts as a fifth member of the band) really speaks to me.

New Order have the wider catalogue, but also have a lot of duds in that catalogue.

In truth, I count these guys as the progression of the same band on my 'favourites' lists.
