Just Wondering.

It would be really cool if a lead singer was gender-neutral.

They had a lot of that in the 70's and 80's.

Female, at least 80% of the music I have has a female lead vocalist. Don't ask me why, I just prefer the sound I guess.

It's so reassuring to hear that some people like female vocals! You see, I'm a songwriter and I happen to be female. I like to sing my own songs because of course I understand them better than anyone else. As a listener, I always want to hear the author of a song sing it, even if their voice sounds weird.

As a listener, I also dislike most female voices. The reason is simple - I prefer lower pitched sounds. I like the sound of a very deep male voice. I like some deep female voices too. Nico would be an obvious example. And that reminds me that I also like odd female voices like that of Moe Tucker.

It depends on the song and style.

Kickass style
Male: Ian Gillian singing "Child in time" live on Made in Japan.
Female: Debbie Harry singing "Atomic" from Eat to the Beat.

Mellow Love song style
Male: David Bowie singing "Wild is the Wind" from Station to Station.
Female: Dusty Springfield singing "Losing You" don't know original album.

I much prefer male to female voice.

Mostly prefer male voices-for singing or listenng to, that's what I like hearing. Not intending to be prejudiced-I'm female-just that I find many female voices offputting & unpleasant to my ears. That's my personal idiosyncrasy-am not saying one is better or worse overall-tastes vary from person to person. Deeper, richer-textured low voice is what pleases my mind-not sharp or high voices.
Of course there are exceptions to my tendencies: such as enjoying Chris Isaak's falsetto (in addition to his low mumbling singing style) voice-or the few women singers I like some stuff by: Debbie Harry/Blondie, Suzanne Vega, Sade, Grace Jones, hip hop artist Jean Grae...

I often prefer music without any vocals. It depends on what I feel like hearing at the time.

Kate Bush
Sarah Mclachlan
Aoife Clancy
Chava Alberstein
Alison Krauss
Rhonda Vincent

Incidentally, all of those are female.

I think for what's out there, I may have a disproportionately high taste in female vocals. I've just flicked through my library and it shows how much instrumental stuff I have these days, which I never realise as much. All I can say is that one of my favourite examples of the human voice is Elizabeth Fraser in "Ivo" by the Cocteau Twins.

I like male vocalists for some songs and female vocalists for others.

I like either. The only thing I don't like is male vocals that sound like half female.
