Bad Religion, NOFX, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, Reagan Youth, Leftover Crack, Social Distortion, Choking Victim, Propaghandi, Less Than Jake, Dropkick Murphys, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Akurat, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Offspring, Tenacious D

you can disagree with this list, but it's just what I've listened to for a while. There are no doubts that there are many, many punk bands that are excellent musicians out there.

I've never really been into punk music, though I do like some of the bands listed, like The Ramones, Fugazi, The Damned, The Clash, etc.

However, there's one band I like that I will probably get a lot of flak for liking...Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. If you don't know who they are, they do punk versions of pop songs. Here's a sample of their work:

'K so these bands prob'ly don't count 'cuz they're new wave, but they started out doing punk rock-type music (and one of them is a legit punk band):

Talking Heads (early stuff like "Psycho Killer" and "Pulled Up" sound punk)

Elvis Costello ("Radio Radio" and "Pump It Up" are kinda punky)

The Police (almost everything on their first album was punk-influenced)

Joe Jackson ("I'm the Man" and "One More Time" sound kinda punky, too)

The Pretenders (many songs off their debut sound punk, most notably "Precious", "Mystery Achievement", and "Tattooed Love Boys")

The Jam (though I'm more a fan of their "softer" stuff like "That's Entertainment" and "Town Called Malice"..."Beat Surrender" is good too...oh yeah and "Start!" sounds just like The Beatles' "Taxman" so I like that one :P)

The Clash (the one legit punk band on my list :P)

Patti Smith (dunno a lot of songs by her actually but a lot of the ones I know are great!)

The Velvet Underground (would punk, particularly the bands I listed, even be here if not for them?!)

Television (what a unique, eclectic band! "See No Evil" ROCKS!! R.E.M.'s cover of the song is good too!)

X (I know one of the members personally! :D I guess they'd be the other legit punk band on this list, but their later stuff like "See How We Are" and "4th of July" take on a more alt-folk stance that sounds vaguely like Concrete Blonde to me)

Anyway, those would be my kinda bands as far as punk is concerned! ;)

As punk as it can get.

Also fun fact: Billie Joe Armstrong sometimes joined them, he'd play guitar.

I'm not going to list every 'punk' band that I enjoy, but there are definitely a few worth mentioning.

The Cure (older)
Dead Kennedys
Black Flag
MDC (if you ever get the chance to see these guys live, don't pass it by, amazing as hell)
The Dicks
Christian Death
Misfits (w/ Danzig)
Husker Du
Joy Division
45. Grave
Alkaline Trio
Leftover Crack & Choking Victim
The Vandals

The list goes on and on. As far as new bands go, I generally prefer to stick local (AZ has a pretty big punk scene), most of the well known 'punk' bands (Green Day, Blink 182, Offspring, etc) that have come out in the last 15-20 years are pretty awful IMO; or at the very least started out cool and went to hell pretty quickly.

IMHO, if Eve 6 are punk, then so are Marcy Playground, Harvey Danger, Everclear, Third Eye Blind, and Lit. To me those are more the type of bands that resemble their sound, and those are more '90s alt-pop/rock bands (at this point, they're almost classic rock since they came out about 12 or 13 years ago, about 15 in Everclear's case)

Offspring is my favorite band period, let alone the punk genre.
