Pitchfork's list of 50 best albums of 2008

what do you guys think of this?

personally I would put Los Campesinos a bit higher, as well as Flying Lotus (preferably in the top 15), The Walkmen and Vampire Weekend I'd put in the top 5 and I wouldn't say that Portishead deserves such a high place, but still in the top 15.

Crystal Castles would be a bit lower if it was up to me.

as for the top place I admit that I'm very happy with it, I would hesitate between FF and Vampire Weekend but all in all not too bad.

Standard-issue Pitchfork list. Aside from DJ/rupture's high placement the top ten didn't surprise me at all. There's some good stuff there, but only one album I've heard out of their top fifty is anything I'm all that crazy about (Grouper's).

I must be pretty uncool. I have heard none of these.

... the album covers are nice.

Pitchfork wouldn't know their arse from their elbow unless or the other was playing a diminished chord while self-financing their album.

easy, it's not a coolness contest :P

some of the stuff on that list is pretty recent so I guess you'll hear more of it during 2009.

ok I would also add Benga's "Diary Of An Afro Warrior" and Q-Tip's "The Rennaisance" and maybe also Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis' "Two Men With The Blues"

also Belle & Sebastian's "BBC Sessions" and Pavement "Brighten The Corners" but they are both reissues so I guess they don't count.

I, too, have never heard of any of them. Don't think it falls in my taste.

Sense of Purpose by In Flames was the best album I heard in 2008.

None of them have much in common with popular rock music except for Bright Blue Dream, a laid-back progressive rock album in the vein of later Church or Pink Floyd that Pitchfork didn't like much. Grouper's album got some good press and was on Pitchfork's list. I guess Extra Life's medieval math rock might remind one vaguely of Gentle Giant.

Pitchfork didn't give the avant-garde/rock crossover Mothertongue a good review, but clearly some other members of staff liked it because it later became one of the "honorable mentions" in their album of the year list.

lol They put Lil Wayne on the list and Kanye West. These people must be fools. Specially since they have Portishead new crappy album as number 2. I'm confused as to why half these bands are even in some sort of top 50. Vampire Weekend? seriously lol

Portishead's album was quite respectable, I thought, and I'm not really a fan of theirs either. This is the only forum where I feel inclined to stick up for them. I'd still rather listen to, say, the Silver Apples.

Vampire Weekend deserved their 7th Spot place... I've got that album, it's pretty good...

What is Pitchfork?
