I listen to sad songs when I'm feeling lonely. I guess I do it because it gives me some catharsis in sorrow. Some songs I listen to:

Love Hurts - Nazareth
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
Talkshow Host - Radiohead
Epiphany - Staind

Maybe some of you would like to share what songs you listen to when you just want to get your pain out of your system.

How do you know I'm mad? said Alice.
You must be, said the Cat, or you wouldn't have come here.

What's the point of being human if you don't know if you feel anything? I honestly think the pain that accompanies rejection is pretty cathartic.

My go to music when I am depressed.....

1) Ben Folds the unauthorized biography of rehold messner

2) modest mouse we were dead before the ship even sank

These two albums never fail to make me feel better

I also listened to Sara bareilles a lot when I was going through a bad breakup

I listen to sad music when I'm sad. I don't usually feel lonely because I enjoy being by myself.

Not me.

I don't listen to sad music when I'm sad. It only makes me more sad.

I don't tend to like Christmas music; it makes me too sad.

I used to, but when I hit my lowest crisis point in 2008-10 I found them too much to bear.

Since then I still listen to the some of the same songs, but when I’m having a nostalgia night, not when I’m at a low ebb.

The soundtrack to my lonely & out-of-sorts moods these days is mostly solo pieces for classical guitar, with the occasional minor key string quartet.

Shostakovich's 8th got quite a few repeats last time I was low.
Bach’s first three cello suites got quite a look in too. (I know not really quartets but still bowed string chamber music)
I had a big phase on Beethoven’s 4 or 5 years ago: I found a YouTube channel with videos of all of them from a festival and just playlisted the lot for a few days!
I also have some Mozart and Haydn on my PC, but can’t remember the numbers off the top of my head (sorry  )

Edit:
Haydn: Op42
Mozart: K406 & 516
:D

I don't ever feel lonely, or sad even. My alexithymia is so strong that I feel "overwhelm" when things are rough, but the emotion presents as an onslaught of different feelings rather than sadness on its own. In that regard, I feel confused or angry or tired or cynical as much as I feel sad. I just get a big mashup of negative feelings, so I play music that purges negative emotion in general. Usually something loud does the trick.
