I really honestly think that gaming is not a problem UNLESS a guy has the option -- playing a game, or spending time with a girl. If he picks the GAME over THE GIRL, then I think a lot of people wonder if he has any kind of testoserone...

That's just one problem. Another problem is if the GAME is so addictive that the gamer forgets to eat, to sleep, to adjust his schedule so that he can fulfill his work or family obligations. There is something truly infantile about having to drag a man away from a game so that you can get him to be involved in a family activity or to get him to go to work.

Now, on the flip side -- a man that plays a game for an hour after work to let off steam -- there's NOTHING wrong with that. There is also nothing wrong with a young man in his twenties who has very little responsibility (no girlfriend, no kids, etc.) playing with other guys. I think that in society, when you get into your thirties and you're still playing games, that gets a little dicey. I agree that gaming is no different than ATV obsessions, golf, etc. -- as others have said, if you overdo ANY special interest, THAT's where you get into trouble...

This.

I don't mind that my fiance plays video games. It's a stress reliever for him, and it's not like he's on the X-Box all day. I usually have my alone time while he's out in his digital battlefield.

Video games aren't an active thing. The traditional view of masculinity does not consist of sitting on a couch with a controller more often than not. Relaxing is something for every now and then, but video games all day really cuts into productivity. Making things on a computer, that's creating things, that's building. Playing a game someone else made all of the time, that's kind of weak. Past a certain point, that gets old for anybody.

I game frequently. But it's when you'd rather spend time with your Xbox than a girl when one could call your manliness into question. I love my gaming, but if I had a girl, she'd take precedence.

Video games are much more fun than watching movies/shows in my opinion. Most guys do one or both of those things on a regular basis.

The masculine aspect of playing video games a lot is that 9 out of 10 females are either very casual gamers or not ones at all. I play video games constantly, and I also can bench press a lot.

I love games and have no problems with them.

But sometimes the type of guy who plays games, likes anime etc is bitchy and annoying.

You can get gamer guys who aren't like this, and they are awesome.

Pssh. I play videogames with my bf, it's a fun activity for us both. Especially when I kick his ass in Soul Calibur 4. :P

Weak? :?

There are lots of activities that involve basically sitting around with something someone else made ; playing cards, board games, reading etc... and some people do these things a lot.

My aspie boyfriend's special interest is games. He's going to college to be an animator, and I like games myself, but he knows a lot more about games than I do. I wouldn't consider it a turn off or anything. Its his outlet. He use to turn to games when he was younger as a coping mechanism to escape the reality of his depression, but now its his creative thing. He has even made rom hacks of old SNES games. I actually find it fasinating.

Where as the question "do real men play video games?" it depends on how you define being a real man. The way I see it, a real man is someone who looks to always better himself, takes care of his family and loved ones, is a protector of women in general and is commited to one woman in particular. As far as physical strength defining masculinity, what of mental strength and power of will?

Not more fun than horror movies.
