What is the US equivalent of "fancy"?

Yes, people say “like” and like-like” to mean “fancy” here in the “US.

It was used in the 70s, and it continues to be used today.

Occasionally I do hear “dig,” too.

Sometimes (yes, it’s not politically correct), a guy might say that he really “wants” a girl.

I’ve told girls that I “dug” them. They all knew what I meant—even in recent times.

People in Oregon use fancy
He fancies you etc
It’ll vary state to state
Like clicker/remote
Soda/pop/cola/soft drink
Etc
We call it pop, south calls it cola northeast calls it soda but it’s all carbureted beverages
In my state Cola is coke cola, south cola could be Pepsi.

Every American equivalent I can think of seems to have a sexual undertone of some sort, whereas it is my impression that an English girl can fancy a guy without necessarily having decided to have sex with him.

Maybe "like" or "like in that way"? As "like" by itself doesn't necessary mean the same thing as "fancy" although it could. Besides, "like in that way" is an entire phrase, plus although it's a common expression, it's by no means universal.

Am I just losing my memory?


"She fancies him" works. As does "she has the hots for him", "she's interested in him", "she likes him" (though context is important with this one), "she has a crush on him", "she's in to him".

"Is into you"

"Is interested in you"

"Has the hots for you"

"Has a crush on you"

"Would date you"....
