Think of it in this way, how would it make you feel if you're physically incapable to cuddle (due to some accident to hands) yet your hubby is excepting it from you?

This is one of these complex social conventions. Too much eye contact (such as a direct stare into someone's eyes) is considered undesirable as it looks aggressive, too little is also undesirable for the factors mentioned upthread.

It is difficult for people with AS to learn the "correct" amount of eye contact to make as it does not always come naturally.
