I see what you mean after reading your original post. It's the "a gift like this or nothing" part.

Shouldn't both sides give presents? Why do men buy flowers on valentines day, for example, and get nothing in exchange? Or do they get things too?

Personally, I don't think I got anything from my gf/wife for valentines day or even for typical men days (like November 19 or February 23).

Because of this I always buy something nice that we can share like chocolate with the whole family and make it an small moment in the evening of just expressing that we appreciate each other.
I only got a gift in the first year of our relationship. But I am mostly the giver when it comes to any romantic gestures. If I want a specific gift, I ask for it, as specific as possible. Otherwise I just gift myself :lol:

Also Ive always thought valentines was more about people buying gifts for the person they love rather that men being forced to give gifts (I'm not discounting what you others have experienced).

I don't see the point of being forced to buy something for someone or feel like you should go out to dinner when you don't want too. We go out for dinner when we want to not just because a day dictates we should :roll:
