What percentage of people with AS get married?
Most people with AS cannot marry or will not marry.

According to a Dutch survey the divorce rate for people with AS is around 80%.

1% according to Tantam (the dude whose criteria is in the DSM-IV-TR)
some sources say 30%

the divorce rate is over 90% in many places.

(It's well under 0% for Autism.)

Quote:
'the table below shows the social adjustment of 46 more able adults with autism known to have needed psychiatric help:'

Tantam wrote:
No contact with a friend in last year: 70%
No sexual relationship for more than one month: 78%
Unemployed: 85%
Never Married: 98%
Resident in hospital or with parents 76%

well, they needed a psychiatric help because they visited a psychiatrist. i found it here and although it's only an essay, the table there is quoted from Tantam.

i dont understand the 'no sexual relationship for more than one month'. i guess that's not that uncommon even for NT's.

Ah, I meant under 1%, sorry. It's effectively zero for Autism.

tomamil,

Thanks for that; it seems that I was wrong, and that it was 2% (which isn't that far from 1%, but still).

hehe, you subtracted one percent from both values :) anyway, 1 or 2 it doesn't make big difference.

there are many undiagnosed aspies who didn't visit a psychiatrist mainly because they coped well and didn't need it and counting them too could make the other number of 30%, but it only can be a guess. still, quite low.

Autism or classic Autism or HFA? I am dxed as HFA (since I had speech delay till age 5 and speech difficulty till about 10)

under 1% ...now that's optimistic. :P

Autism as in HFA/LFA. They say that no one with Autism marries (HFA/LFA), and those that do are outliers statistically (hence, under 1%).

Whilst it just labels the 2% under "Autism" by Tantam in the link, it's referring to Asperger's, specifically; it's from the "American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook", I think.

As I said though, it goes up to 30% or so in Asperger's by some research (which is markedly better than 2%); even though that 30% tend to have a 98% failure rate.

Love thy interest, seems to be the motto.

Divorce rates generally are rising... not just for aspies.

I would marry only if
1) the girl insists on it and I'd be doing her a huge favour with it (I find it unnecessary as a proof of loving her, she will know often enough without a ceremony ; but if it would really make her happy than any non-religious marriage would be OK)
2) if she has different citizenship as me (being abroad myself the odds are quite high this'd happen) ; in this case adopting her citizenship means we are either both welcome in a country or both unwelcome, but they could not tear us apart based on visa rules anymore

I know one Asp girl married to an Asp guy. That's it. She really loves him a lot, but they have not been married long. I sure hope it works. She is very kind!

The only other I knew was a LFA girl who had the misfortune of getting roped into an arranged religious marriage with a much older man who was going to cure her/take care of her. Psychopath. I am not even sure she is still alive as when I met her she was totaly suicidal in a group setting. Gad- worse story ever.
