Just now, we had to read information about the Ethics of War and Peace while the teacher was off telling something to the eighth graders, but the person in charge decided to watch videos of Toddlers and Tiaras?

Was I the only one not for this?

I could see having a discussion about the ethics of Toddlers in Tiaras - some of those parents are almost abusive. Plus there's the whole issue of dressing children up as women ...

If somebody who works at a school watches Toddlers & Tiaras, then they shouldn't be working at a school. Enough said.

I've watched it before. I don't want to work at a school, but why should that disqualify me?

I didn't know that Toddlers and Tiaras was more important than the education of our youth 8O

What is the world coming to? :(

There is a definite sexualization of the girls - very disturbing.

To understand what compulsory public education was really designed for, Google:
The Underground History Of American Education by John Taylor Gatto. He is a former teacher who dug deep into the history and purpose of our school system. He turned up some very interesting information that makes non-sense like this make sense. You can read the book on-line for free.

The teacher was off to tell the eighth graders something. The person he put in charge was a student not more than a year older than I am (he put me in charge, but the majority would favor the other girl, so I was silenced.)

We weren't discussing it, though. We were just watching clips (I watched only part of it before coming onto WP in the middle of it) and the girl "in charge" said she watches it regularly.

So, let me get this straight.

The teacher put another student in charge who decided to disobey and do something else entirely, namely pulling up clips from a TV show, and I'm assuming this was on her own personal gadget or an internet-capable computer that was part of the classroom setting?

And instead of going ahead and reading what you were supposed to be reading as per the teacher's assignment, or watching the clips that the other students were watching, you decided to jump online on another device in order to post to a forum?

School really has changed in 20 years.

The work he decided he wanted us to read was on the computer the student was using and I'm pretty sure the thing was a document, not a website. Without the computer she was using, I wouldn't have had access to what we were supposed to be doing. I decided, "Hey, since I have no power here and the kids are doing whatever the hell they want, I'm going to do what I want."

I don't think WrongPlanet.net is much worse than Toddlers and Tiaras.

Probably not, but you might have been the only one that wouldn't go along with the peer pressure.
