I am not sure if I have friends or not. I mean, I have my drumline friends, because we spend so much time together and have so many inside jokes, but outside of that I have no clue. There are people who I think may be my friends, but I'm not really sure. How can one tell?

friends like you, pretty much no matter what you do...

enemies hate you, pretty much no matter what you do...

friends try to make you feel better...

enemies try to make you feel worse...

(hint: they both can fail)

I'll define "friends" the people I feel very confortable with and that I've known for a long time. I can tell them anything and I will listen and be interested in what they are saying. it doesn't matter if we don't see each other for a long time or are not in touch for a long time (most of my good friends are back in France, I'm living in the USA for 3/4 years now) I know we can still talk and trust each other. I can count on them if I have problems and vice versa.

and then they are the people I know and with who I'm trying to be friendly to, but they are not my "friends".

Friends accept you for who you are. They also don't always mooch, though they might from time to time. You also accept them to for who they are, and you can ask them for favors.

To me, friend is yet another completely unwarranted word in the dictionary.

theres three types of friends.

1. acquaintances - you talk whenever you see each other, but you rarely if ever hang out
2. contextual friends - you meet up for a certain interest, but aren't friends outside of that interest
3. real friend - the kind that calls you to see how your day is going

I've given up on that question. Friends are those people who call me their friend.

Losing friends is pretty easy if you do something wrong.

I would say two people are friends if they like and trust each other and go out of their way to spend time with each other, because they enjoy it. The "going out of their way" bit is key to me. I've been "friendly" with people at work or in other settings where we just happened to be in the same place at the same time, regularly, but I knew that if I stopped going there I'd never see or hear from those people again. Those were not "friends" in my book, even though I still enjoyed my time with them.

there are a lot less friends than otherwise on the planet
one might say that if they're easy to lose then maybe they weren't friends - just people you knew..
(but one might say all kinds of things)

I've found (recently) that if you act like they are friends*, they will too. and vice-versa

*this is really hard for me sometimes...

Most of my 'friendships' are one-way- if I don't text them, they probably won't text me so I'm not sure if that counts. I really wish people would tell you when you're a friend or not.
