One of my friends was described by someone else as "behind his nice guy personality he is actually much more sinister"

So in more depth what is he saying about my friend as a whole person?

He's saying that your friend is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

In other words, he is nice on the surface, but his niceness is hiding a not-so-nice part of himself.
