OK. How about telling us about the State of Origin Games. My former boss was from Sydney and he told us all about the games from the NSW point of view. I'm sure your perspective is a bit different.

Hi there BubbaHoTep! Nice to hear from you.Sorry I can't really fill you in on the sporty side of the state of origin.I don't fit the sterotype of the typical Australian. My skin is not bronzed and I don't follow any sports on television.I would rather watch a documentry. I am originally from south of the border.Quite frankly I am appalled that our government spends so much of our hard earned tax dollars on sport instead of health, education and upgrading infastructure.
The state of origin is all about commercialism and getting bums on seats. If you have any other suggetions I am all ears. :)

Hi Goldie. I notice you're a fellow Aussie. I live in Melbourne myself. Good to see there are a few others of us who don't fit the suntanned sportsworshipping stereotype. Because of this stereotype, sometimes I'm ashamed to admit to being Australian. Then people pile on all the usual expectations, e.g. they ask me which football team I support (none of them), my opinion of how the Ashes Test is going (wouldn't have the foggiest) - I try to mumble something innocuous and I get treated like a weirdo because people immediately see I have no interest in these things.

As you say, the Government spends a huge amount on sport, and I often think sadly of all the good that could be done in the world if that money were spent on easing poverty or improving health or education or intoducing people to great ideas or great art.

I like watching documentaries too, but a few months ago we bought a flatscreen TV for $1400, which was a big mistake because it is so difficult to operate that you need multiple tertiary degrees to figure it out, besides which the image is considerably worse than our old TV. :( So the result has been that I've now virtually given up watching TV at all. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Hi there Rory!
Nice to see that there are some like-minded aussies out there. You said that you do not watch television, lately. What are you doing with your newly found free time?I do not think that you are missing out on anything. The choice is sport, more sport,or re-runs of shows that were on 20 years ago.My t.v. stays off most of the time.I would rather listen to music or read.I have seen that there have been terrible bush-fires down that way.I feel for all of the people who are being effected. Not a good lead up to Christmas. Is the smoke from the fires effecting you in Melbourne?I have never been to Melbourne. What is it like living there? :)

Hi there Alternative!
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to get some form of instant messaging and chat happening on this computer. The thing is 1-I have no idea what I am doing. 2-this computer is ancient and 3-So are the programs that run it.
I have discovered that most sites require a minimum of windows 98 and explorer 6 before being able to download information. This is where I come undone.I can't seem to even get onto any yahoo or hotmail sites therefor this limits my options for communication.I got some great advice here at WP and I have tried it out without success.
I was able to access freenode but I have no idea how to use it.I only discovered that there was a list of chat rooms.I can find that list but don't know how to get into them.Do you have any suggestions here? :?

Hi Goldie
Well, not watching TV gives me more time for my hobby, which is photography, and also I like to read and listen to music, like you, and I like to cook.

I actually don't like Melbourne. I am from Adelaide originally, which is a much nicer place, but I have to live in Melbourne for my job. Melbourne is cold and grey and wet (although I have to admit that it's not as bad as it used to be, one good thing about global warming is that it has improved Melbourne's climate!). It revolves around money and business. People are relatively unfriendly, traffic is awful and the place is mostly ugly. There are exceptions to all these generalizations, but mostly I give Melbourne the thumbs down.

The fires are several hudred kilometres east of here and the city is not affected, except that from time to time we get a lot of smoke haze.

Are you in Brisbane? I was only there once, which was about 20 years ago, and only for a couple of days, so I don't know much about it.

Hi Rory!
How is life treating you?I envy anyone that is able to use a camera properly, unfortunately it is not my forte. If 1 in 10 shots come out the way that I intended I think I am doing well.I am great at taking shots of my own fingers, the camera strap or chopping peoples heads off.Or often I will get shots with strands of my own hair.Do you take pictures of anything in particular?Do you use different cameras?
I live in a rural town called Bundaberg, where they make the rum.I have also lived in Sydney.Originally I am from Canberra. So I can relate to cold grey climates though they are not my preference.Changes in climate have effected us here too.I did not use my heater for the first time this year.It is said that Bundaberg's climate is very much like Hawaii's.I can not say if this is true as I have never been to Hawaii.
As for Brisbane I have been there 4 times so my knowledge is very limited. To me it is just another large city.Alright to visit but I would not like to live there.I find it hard to handle the number of people and traffic.Everything is just too busy.It stresses me out too much.I can handle these situations for only short amounts of time and always need time to recharge after the event.
Lately it seems that my concentration span is limited so it has been hard to get into any novels.I am hopeless when it comes to reading.Once something takes my interest I can not stop,it is as if I must read it to the end.Do you have any favourite authors?

Well, I am a great photo enthusiast and I go out every weekend looking for things to photograph. It could be anything, sometimes its landscapes, sometimes its nature, sometimes people, or could be buildings or street scenes or abstract patterns or the ocean or birds or animals.... just whatever I can find that interests me. It's my form of artistic expression. Quite an expensive hobby, unfortunately. I've got 2 cameras but the second is much better so I hardly ever use the original one now. Also I use 2 lenses plus filters and a lens hood and a tripod, then there is the digital editing programme... gets quite complicated.

Never been to Bundaberg but if the climate is like Hawaii it must be terrific. (I was in Hawaii once for a months holiday.) Just watch out for that rum, eh? :-)

Also I lived in Canberra for 13 years. Canberra is not like Melbourne in weather at all. When it is cold in Canberra its bright, crisp and invigorating. When its cold in Melbourne its grey, damp and depressing. I loved Canberra. Such a beautiful place. Wish I could still live there.

I don't remember much about Brisbane. I was only there for 2 days for work. No time to look around, really.

I also have trouble concentrating on novels. I wonder if this is part of having Aspergers'? These days I prefer to read non-fiction or short stories. Favourite authors? - hard to say, but I suppose I would mention Hemingway, Steinbeck, Thomas Hardy, VS Naipaul, Thomas Love Peacock, Maupassant, Naguib Mahfouz. Recently I discovered Bernard Malamud, who is a much overlooked writer whose stories are incredibly powerful and can just about make you cry.

If you want to have a penpal-type correspondence it's probably better to do it offboard rather than by posting here on Wrong Planet. But first I had better tell you that I am 54 (55 next month) and married. My guess is that you are mid-twenties (??). Doesn't matter to me at all, I'm happy to write to anyone who is friendly, and I would like to make friends, but maybe you might prefer somebody younger. Anyway, if you do want an e-friendship, email me at [email protected]. If not, then enjoy yourself on Wrong Planet anyway!

Cheers
Rory

try starting a conversation by just being nice and maybe asking how the person is and what they have been up to and then let it flow

Hi hi!

I'm Kezza, and I'm an Aussie who lives two hours away from Brissie and one of my obssessions is AFL and wrestling. LOL, typical Aussie.

I love to play my sax, and I love travelling and photography. I also like to draw and write a lot.

I have an overactive imagination and I get excited and overloaded very easy.
