So far, my graduate Spanish class at the University at Albany (SUNY Albany) has been successful in more ways than one. I feel as though I'm doing pretty good.

Also, there is the social aspect. The very first class, I met a young woman (name withheld) who is a nice person to conversate with and one I think somewhat highly of despite the fact that we see each other only once a week (or thereabouts). I have started to think about asking her out because I think I have given enough time to let the acquaintanceship develop.

But I have always had rejection tucked away at the back of my mind, and I've come to accept that after I've asked women out in the past. One very obvious reason is when they mention that they have a boyfriend -- regardless of whether they say it up front or they weave it into conversation.

So, the question before the House is this: how does one tell if a woman has or does not have male companionship? Any advice?

Usually I notice that if you let someone talk enough to anyone, they will mention it somehow. Some way to evoke it is to ask what they did the previous weekend. It's innocent enough, but if she did something with an SO, it will probably come out. Also, if you can steer a conversation towards living arrangements, most people in graduate school are probably living with their SO if they have one. Luckily, since it's close to spring break, asking her if she's going anywhere will probably yield an answer that suggests her status.

Bring up or wait until it is brought up something like relationships or dating. You might be able to hint that you are single, like joke about single life being annoying but nice, or some mixed statement that says you are comfortable where you are but you also like to date. By saying you are comfortable being single you are saying you are not desperate but as long as you also mentioning you wouldn't mind not being single you open up the door. Maybe make some stereotype tease about females but back it up that you still like them.

Bringing up the topic and your own feelings about it might get her to say something like "yeah, my boyfriend...blah blah blah" or, "yeah, my old boyfriend was...blah blah blah". once the topic is up, even if she doesn't explicitly say shes not seeing someone, its no longer tabboo or presumptuous to ask her in the context of the conversation if she has a boyfriend. like if she mentions her old boyfriend but doesn't actually say she is still single. And if she mentions an old boyfriend, her mind is still on that rather than on a current one, so its a good bet she is single, since a taken girl wants to talk about her boyfriend, not some old love. If you can do it in a teasing way that would help as well.

It's hard to say.

Mind you I wouldn't mind it if someone took me.

*cough*

That sounds vaguely...ominous.

Currently single, but was taken between 1997-1999 and 2002-2006.
