Not sure what part of forum belongs but my topic is basing on social life though. I don't drink because I know it harms myself and its so bad to environment and health.

The reason why I hate alcohol because every time when I have people drinking no matter how much they drink the conversations gets so hard and extremely terrible. Also their minds scares me too. All of my family drinks, like typical Aussies and Pommies drinks. And I used to live at colleges during my UG years. I got traumas, nightmares and that from alcoholism being dependent on social life. I experienced some personal attacks from both my family and the people I meet in colleges and that from their drinking. I don't understand why they depend life on alcohol.

It drives me nuts. When I say that to people, they say its offensive to say why alcohol is destroying lives and the environment. I meet plenty environmentalists people and they get drunk. I was like, huh? Are you trying to save your planet by drinking large consumption of alcohol from desires of pollution???! !!

I am so curious how the world is going to live in 2050 where alcoholism being convinced by marketing, commercialism and social society changes? We all would be dead before the year of 2050!!

One thing, people make friends and relationships from alcoholic events is sad! VERY SAD!

Well people who are not alcoholics do not care to be classified as such...drinking doesn't mean they are alcoholic. And yes some people who are into helping the environment do consume alcohol here and there. Not to say alcoholism is not an issue and no one gets out of control or over-does it...but it is possible to consume it responsibly. Also just in general people don't like being told what to do so if people are enjoying drinks at an occasion that is probably not the time to tell them how they shouldn't do that and are killing the whole planet by doing so(which I don't entirely understand).

That said there are a lot of micro-breweries and many do strive to be somewhat environmentally friendly in their production of beer for instance....so having a beer isn't necessarily contributing to destroying the planet or pollution.
It is sometimes best to live and let live, if you don't enjoy it then don't drink it....if people hassle you for that well its up to you not to give into their pressure, but its best not to go to a social event where alcohol is served and then tell everyone how morally flawed they are because they had a drink.

And alcohol has been around for thousands of years...the world/humans have survived this long, so I doubt it will cause an end to the planet by 2050.

I dont know where you get the idea that drinking beer "hurts the environment" any more than consuming any other manufactured product does. Drinking soda pop, or bottled water, or eating bread probably impacts the environment about the same as drinking beer ( beer is essentially liquid bread).

Eating meat hurts the environment far more than does drinking any kind of alcoholic beverage (hard for me to admit because I can do without alcohol more easily than I can do without meat). So a vegan environmentalist who gets ploughed all of the time may have other problems, but being a hypocrite would not be one of them. Lol!

But yeah- if the family environment you came from was full of violent drunks I dont blame you for wanting to get as far from alcohol as possible. You make it sound like the whole country of Australia is a bunch of silent cowboy types who can't socialize without libation.

I get your frustration about alcohol and social interaction. I'm Dane, and in Denmark people cannot have fun unless there is alcohol availiable. People look at me in horror when I tell them I don't like to drink, like I'd just fallen from the moon. It's deeply frusrating, especially when you want to socialize, but are instantly met with social stigma. It's such a big part of the culture, people can't imagine that some might not like it.

People don't talk their health and wellbeing so seriously. At same time they want a healthy and fun lifestyle but in reality its all the drinking. In Australia it so stupid. Bottle shops out numbers junk food stores in reflection to USA where there are more junk food stores than liquors! I believe both thing is a such a mainstream sick habit. Obesity issues and alcohol issues.

People easily judge between those two even the one who doesn't drink, like us being judged by the drinkers because we don't drink. It makes them think we are not normal to their minds into the mainstream society. Its sickening.

Australia is developing a drug and mental health issues. It very reflective to available sources of alcohol in stores, even KFC started their license!

Its so sad that people in general have no self confidence without alcohol. It makes the world looks so narrow-minded and cruel. Its like seeing everyone who drinks have a mental problem.

Not sure where you get that idea. Plenty of people have self confidence without alcohol. And just because many shy people drink alcohol to become more self-confident, it doesn't make alcohol a bad thing.

Here's some devil's advocate for you -
Alcoholism is epidemic in my family, just about all of them have, or have had, serious problems with alcohol, including me. I used to hate it when I was a kid, as it directly caused domestic violence, poverty, illness, abuse and social problems. Never drank a drop all through adolescence and most of my 20's, and had to deal with the attitude you describe from others, until a landslide of health problems forced my hand and I slipped the same sideways direction as my familial predisposition. Sobered up and again encountered that social culture where everyone would go out, get wasted, make fools of themselves and I'd be left sitting around waiting to be designated driver.
What did I get out of that? It's not the alcohol itself. I have known people who drank responsibly, and despite my dual attitudes of complete aversion and overindulgence, this never bothers me. A few glasses of wine with dinner is fine. I have a problem with people and their behaviour when they drink to excess. I don't believe I have to put up with peoples bad behaviour just because they're drunk, or have any obligation to be anywhere near them when they drink too much, based on my repulsion for that behaviour. I also don't believe I have to just forget and dismiss anything they may have done drunk just because they were drunk. They still did it. There are consequences inebriation doesn't excuse to erase.
Thus, a little is fine. A lot is a nightmare. Maybe you're just in the wrong crowd? I've been in the company of people who are mainly Buddhists and hippies, and there's no way you'd catch them pub crawling for kicks.

I am not sure if I am in wrong crowd to be honest. I meet lot of people who are environmentalists, some are hippies and also are being serious business/career-committed people. I see some drinks way too much because others does a same. And others also doesn't drink much, like one glass of wine is because of others does a same thing.

I think there is some sort of addiction. Seeing people being dependent on you because they feel comfortable with. I don't believe this is best possible way to overcome those challenges as you mentioned in first paragraph.

I never drink because I am smart enough to know it would impact my life adversely. I don't know who for the others have their lives on as being a drinker. Everyone is different, but the problem is that alcohol is making people less unique. However, the conservative or narrow-minded judgemental/bitchy people easily come across seeing unique people are creepy. Likewise, me. Quite frustrating though.

I can say most 'developing' countries are like that. Indonesia for instance because of cultural and religious beliefs. Except Bali where the 'sin' part comes to place. Like Las Vegas in US for gambling and prostitution.

Me too, alcohol has always proved to me that people are sheepish followers, the first man that decided to drink that stuff was a lunatic, it smells god awful, first time I drank it I kept getting gag reflexes and it tasted horrible.

No amount of peer-pressure is going to ever make me drink that stuff, I own myself, society is filled with sheep, people condition themselves to drink that stuff because they are afraid of exclusion, they are terribly afraid of it.

Franky, I choose to own myself.

Where can I learn more about how alcohol is bad for the environment?

(That is not at all intended as an attack. I have just never encountered this idea before. I'm one of those vegetarians who doesn't eat meat for the sake of the environment...)

Alcohol brings out the worst in people. Apparently it's not so bad in small doses, but how many people in this world actually take it in only small doses? Most crimes are committed while drunk. Most unplanned pregnancy is because of drinking. Whenever I've seen public celebrations where alcohol flows freely on TV it gets extremely ugly with fighting and rioting and the police are constantly on their toes but they're the "bad guys" for ruining the drunkies' "fun". Most kids start drinking underage because they're curious and firmly believe nothing bad will happen.

I don't get it. You eat a Big Mac once in a blue moon, and people ask you how you can eat something so vile and tell you how people are fat and disgusting because of it. And yet everywhere I look I see drinking "manly" beverages that look like toxic waste and getting hammered being glorified long past ridiculousness. People even brag about how violently sick they got and how hungover they are now. Oh, I'm so impressed, not. Alcoholic drinks also have loads of calories but no one blames that on obesity. No, pop and even orange juice are the true evil. I've seen cards geared at people turning 21 and they're all about getting really drunk, which is even more strange since the legal drinking age in Canada is 19!

I had to learn to tolerate it to a point or I'd go insane, just like the vegans who would let a million human fathers, mothers, and children die to save one food animal have to learn to tolerate meat-eating.
