Imagine trying to merge onto a freeway and your vehicle is a low power moped! That's how it is with me if I try to engage in workplace banter....whether at my summer volunteer gig or my regular job during the school year.

Keeping quiet is my best option although in new situations I'm tempted to jump in. Not a great idea when you are a moped around a bunch of fast vehicles.

Yeah....I suck at it too.

That’s why I howl in the hallways.

Banter is overrated. Who wants to keep up with that lot?

Love that metaphor - that sums up what it's like perfectly! :D

I'm better served not saying much. I tried the banter because it felt awkward being the only quiet person.

People are afraid to be witty with me; they think I'll go "postal" at a moment's notice LOL

(when, in actuality, I'm a pussycat  )

Small talk is probably what I should have said. Banter is more of a sexual nature. I don't touch that one at all.

Much of "banter" is sexual...but there is also something called "ranking out," which involves people "play-insulting" each other. Even, in uncommon cases, play-fighting with each other.

All kinds of games.....but I have bantering also referred to as the small talk people at work take part in.

I think "banter" has to, 100%, have a sort of "witty" and "clever" element to it. At least that's the intention.

Much of "small talk" is not "banter" to me. There is no attempt to seem witty and clever.

Much of "small talk" is about "filling in the gaps," so to speak. Filling them with superfluous stuff at least sometimes.

I can do it sometimes----but I don't like to do it. And I don't always succeed.

I'd rather talk about Australopithecus any day :D

Besides that, banter is a slippery slope for the married person...unless it's kidding around with the same sex kind.

My interest is food history and culture.

I find it fascinating that the "original corn" was maybe an inch long.

It's amazing how people domesticated plants. I've wondered whether the people who came up with agriculture were originally of an autistic mode of thought. Who had a "special interest" in cereal grains and domesticating them so they don't have to hunt exclusively.
