How would you make friends outside work or school? I try to go to activities that I enjoy, but I meet two kinds of people:
- those who don't want to socialise at all, they get there and then leave quickly
- extroverts, who like overstimulating environments such as clubbing, city centre, shopping malls, restaurants with uncertain food and loud music, they like to meet in large groups, I can't hear what is going on when there are too many people or loud music
I would want to make friends with people, who want to socialise, but in smaller groups and in calm places such as parks and museums or generally more chill places, and who don't want to "hop on an occasion" and "be surprised". How would you go about meeting such people? Also having common interests would be good.

Trains, model railroads etc are great ways to meet online and offline introverts. :D

Maybe you could try joining a book club?

I followed my strongest interests and joined online groups (Facebook). I got to know others who loved the same things and we learned to know each other at least a little on line before small groups began to gather "in person" to do some interest related activities. Some I enjoyed a lot, others, not so much. Meeting on line first gives you a chance to sort of get to know each other a bit before proceeding to the next level of meeting In person. You can consider and discard potential interactions ahead of time that way.
Also, you might find interest groups that meet locally by using meetup.com, or Craigslist.org. If you got to those sorts of meetings, watch for others who are not in the heart of it all, but sort of on the fringes. Usually they are relieved if you speak to them and are the most likely introverted sorts, too. I find I tend to watch from the sidelines, don't you?
