A few weeks ago at the pub this older woman was getting into an argument with a younger man because of his behaviour. After the guy was forcefully removed by the bouncers I asked the woman if everything was alright and she said to me "f**k of and go away". Me being me I didn't react but just walked away.

Do you think that was unfair she behaved to me without even knowing that well?

First of all, I am really sorry that you talked to you like that and yes it was unfair. It also sounds like she said things out of anger because she was probably still feeling pretty heated. I don't think there was anything that you could have said or done otherwise.

My one interpretation is that you're butting in.
"You're an outside party, it got nothing to do with you, it ain't your place to and it ain't your business."

Another was that asking that question after the incident is somewhat dissonating itself.
Maybe a bit too intimate or is against whatever personal pride she has.
Sure you're being nice or express concern, but in some way you're stepping in a boundary at some way or another.
You two might be at least acquainted but not that close enough to 'seem personal'.

Another was that the old lady was impulsive and would rather cool off before any discussions related to the matter.
