I've heard lots of hype about how he is one of the greatest artists of all time and ect but, to be honest, I kind of think he sounds like crap! I am curious to know what others think and if anyone could explain to me exactly why he is so renowned, I would greatly appreciate it.

:)

^Thanks Bogan. I've heard all but the last one.

Is it possible for you to explain what you like about him?

His music is very soulful. I don't know certain songs bring out feelings and emotions in me and some of his songs do that to me. I'm not a big elton john fan or anything I just like certain songs.

Do you like those songs I posted?

Everybody has different tastes in music.

I know. He just seems to be rather popular and I don't understand why so I wanted input as to what others think. Thanks :D

Well I suppose the tunes of his songs are alright for the most part. What I don't like about him is primarily his voice. He sounds like a drugged-up version of a country singer

I don't think he can carry a tune at all and he kind of drops his notes at the end instead of carrying it or runs several notes together instead of keeping the tempo. For example think of how his version of Circle of Life contrasts with the lady who sings it in the Lion King movie. She says "It's the circlleeee of liiffeee" on an upward/carrying note and he says "Its the ciirrcleoflife" on a downward note. Btw I am no musician and I don't know the correct words for things or much about techniques or anything so forgive me if I sound ignorant. I just don't think that sounds good at all.

As for him being on muppet show? Well I guess that kind of just makes me feel bad for the muppets :lmao:

I think Elton is brilliant. To hear him live and actually watch him play, he's a musical genius. I am constantly in awe of his talent on the piano. Elton helped to make piano music mainstream. He could really rock it. The fact that he's 62 and still rockin it like he does is pretty damn impressive. I just saw him and Billy Joel in concert a few weeks ago and I got goosebumps during the concert.

Do you have a musical background? Not that it matters, but I find that a lot of his die hard fans tend to be people who have extensive musical backgrounds themselves. Piano is one of the many instruments I play so when I watch him in action, I can see why he's as renowned as he is. :)

That's just my two cents worth. By like Bogan said, everyone has different tastes in music. 8)

Thanks for the input, CelitcGoddess!! That could definately be the problem. I have no musical background at all. :)

(Just to clarify since others often misinterpret my intentions - I didn't creat this thread with the intent of slamming him or proving he is no good. I really do want to understand why he is so respected in the musical industry and what other people think of him. I am most interested in hearing from people who love him so they can help me to understand. I only put him down cuz Bogan asked :P)

He puts some really good music out. 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' is one of my favorite songs.

I'd say that Elton John is more of a singles artist, so if you were wanting to check him out, I'd recommend his 'Greatest Hits' CD from the 1970's.

Elton John - 'Greatest Hits' - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... fyxq95ld0e

Read the review for the greatest hits compilation. It explains how it's the perfect Elton John compilation for casual fans.

I don't play, but I certainly can recognize his talent on the piano. He does some truly magnificent work on it.

I think he's a very talented artist and am a big fan of his older stuff. The newer stuff seems to sound commercialized or something. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I think Elton wrote ths song about mitharatowen. :chin:

Interesting thing about elton john is that he never wrote any lyrics they were written by Bernie Taupin.
