Next on the news " Dogs use puppy dog eyes to get what they want"
Cats just seem to be communicating their needs they do afterall rely on us for food and water and other stuff. I never found my cat meowing annoying unless it's at a very bad time or he wants something he shouldn't have, I'm actually kind of glad he lets me know he needs stuff my memory is rather bad .

in defense of purring to get food: i'm not so sure it's unreasonable. imagine being dependent on some large, unpredictable being for your basic needs. humans do this too, in a way. i mean, imagine being rude to someone who's interviewing you for a job. in general, people try to be friendly in those situations. maybe it's our equivalent of purring to be fed.

Great point.

Oh, I don't find it annoying - it's quite cute, and obviously necessary for them. At least cats stop mewing after you've fed them (unlike babies, who frequently cry all the time for no apparent reason).

Yep. Cuteness is sometimes a survival technique.

My cat is called Cleo as well! 8)

My husband was oblivious to her early morning "feed me now!" miaows, and one time she punched him in the eye to make him get up and feed her! Which he duly did.

"exploit"

we always soil the innocense of animals when we try to turn them into humans, and we REALLY LOVE to soil their innocense as well, such as making chimps dance and clap their hands for movies, talking about our pets as if they know what we're talking about, oh i hate that almost as much as sheer animal cruelty :M "yes fido knows what im talking about!" no it doesnt, its a dog. your words makes no sense to it, cus its a dog.

cats purr cus they noticed it worked.

another thing cats do, is to invent new sounds why isnt this shocking and amazing?
cats can continue making new sounds too, if you stop reacting to old sounds.
depends on the cat, my cat has allready tested new sounds, since she is very vocal.

My cat only purrs when he sits on me. The rest of the day he's all 'REEEOWW!!'
I don't find that subtle or manipulative at all.

I'm remembering the "Cats are Autistic" Thread from a while back  Manipulative autistics are as see through as water.

My most manipulative cat died about a month ago (he was 16 years old, and had cancer)

The new holder of that (dis)honor, a longhaired black cat named Cleo, jumps on me to wake me up to feed her, then throughout the day, tries to gem to pet her by constantly meowing, until either she gets bored, or I pet her.

EVERY TIME I see this topic out of the corner of my eye, I think it's "Cats explode".

My cat purrs a lot when I stroke her, or when I get the cat food out!

I am not suprised by this. When my cats purr, I turn to butter.
