I've always pronounced the g in asperger's as the G in George. But the newsreaders reporting the recent McKinnon case are all pronouncing it with G as in Guitar. How do you pronounce it? Am I the only one who got it wrong? :)

I picked guitar. However I used to pronounce it as George. However after being so saturated by american pronunciations it's sort of caught on into my vernacular as well. It's still more of a 50 50 thing with me though. Sometimes its george, sometimes guitar.

I am told the correct pronunciation is g in guitar and try to use it but I still often say G as in George.

In English, I pronounce it as in guitar. In the Netherlands I use the general Dutch "G" sound, but I cannot think of any English word that has the same sound. Here, however, there is a dispute about whether the first or second syllable should be stressed.

The person I know who knew Hans Asperger says it ahs-pair-gair/ahs-pair-ger with hard g.

It's a normal German/Austrian 'er' that sounds mighty like air. Nothing like the heavy English e or the high-pitched English e that sounds like German i.

To put it differently: I don't know phonetics, sorry.

I pronounce it "asperjers" because it sounds better than the american pronunciation, I mean pronouncing the "g" as in g for guitar sounds really daft because its sounds like yes you guessed it "assburgers" .

If the American were to pronouce it with the g as in George it would probably sound like ASS-purgers, because they have a tendency to force stress on the first syllable. I say is as As-PUR-ger's (with the g as in George).

Technically, the hard G comes from the Austrian/German pronunciation - because Asperger an Austrian name.

I just feel that a person's name should be pronounced the way that person would normally say it.

I pronounce it with a G as in George, but then most British people that I have spoken to do as well. On the other hand, I have noticed that, from the number of American people I have spoken to, they pronounce it 'assburger'. Each to their own I suppose.

Well, that would seem to be the definitive. I'd have to assume that someone who knew the man would know how to pronounce his name without offending him (and even I am offended by the pronunciation ASS burgers).

So to clarify - Oz-pare-gare... Aahs. Pair. Gair. Correct?

Further question. On which syllable is the accent placed?

Could we send a press release on this to all major news organizations and television network sitcom writers?
