Gotta Catch 'Em AAR: Rise of the Lowbies
Note: AAR stands for After Action Report
Let's play Pokémon LeafGreen!
All right, Pokémon fans, as I've been a Pokémon gamer for 10 years it's time to do a real walkthrough, but with a twist: only Pokémon up until Viridian Forest may be used. This should raise the difficulty level somewhat, yes?
I'm getting all excited! ^^
Geez, I had no idea I looked so androgynous. *unzips* Do you see now, old man?
I'll name my character ERIK and the rival GUNNAR.
I grab the Potion from the PC and head for the wild grass. I'm hindered by OAK, who claims that I can't go out into the wild grass without Pokémon as protection. I try to assure him that a few punches and well-aimed kicks will be more than enough, but he drags me to his lab.
Squirtle is my choice, as it's my favourite Pokémon.
Tip: Save before picking your Pokémon. If it has totally lame stats, you can reload.
This one has pretty balanced stats, it's a deal! We'll rely a lot on this little bugger, after all.
Repeated tackling made my rival's Bulbasaur faint, and Squirtle gained a level.
OK, I'll stop here for now, since I want to ask you what Pokémon will be best.
The Pokémon available to us is:
Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot
Rattata/Raticate
Mankey/Primape
Spearow/Fearow
Caterpie/Metapod/Butterfree
Weedle/Kakuna/Beedrill
Pikachu/Raichu
Hmm... this is going to be hard.

I made it to Viridian City, but the way ahead is blocked by a man!
The woman blames coffee, but I blame alcohol. Go to the Poké Mart and the guy in charge will give you the item 'OAK'S PARCEL'. Go back to Pallet Town and give it to, well, Oak, and he'll give you a Pokédex as well as five Poké Balls! Be sure to stop by at Daisy (the house to the right) on your way out of town and she'll give you a Town Map. Back in Viridian the man is a bit more sober, but not quite sober as he catches a wild Weedle and gives you a near useless box. At least he'll let you through now.
All right, in Route 22 I caught three Mankeys to compare it's stats.
This damn bugger required four Poké balls to catch!
On the other hand, it turned out to be the best of the three. Mankey can learn Cross Chop on level 40, a powerful attack but which has 80 accuracy and only 5 PP! ('Kross' means crush in Swedish, so I find it somewhat amusing. (8)) It can also learn Earthquake, a truly powerful move.
I also caught four pidgeys and cherry picked the greatest of them. A few runs between Viridian Forest and the Poké Center later, and both Squirtle and Pidgey is in level 10.
Free antidote here, BTW.
I return to Route 22, where I find...
Gunnar, my eternal enemy! He's got a level 9 Pidgey and a level 8 Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle, so be careful.
Pidgey, with it's Keen Eye, probably should've done a better job there. But I managed to wipe out Bulbasaur without any problems, and Gunnar promptly left.
Starting to look damn good!
Now that I think about it, Squirtle was probably a very good choice for a starter, since otherwise my team would fare badly against Fire Pokémon, and Squirtle can also learn Ice Beam (found in Celadon Game Corner), an attack that is very important in bringing down Lance and his dragons. The only other available Pokémon that can learn Ice Beam is Raticate, and it's obvious it wouldn't be able to do as good a job.
I'm also planning to pick up Pikachu, which quite obviously must be in (:P) and Butterfree, who's Psychic (from TM28, found in Saffron City) and Silver Wind (on level 47), both which will be instrumental in bringing down Agata, Sabrina and, to a lesser extent, Koga.
The sixth Pokémon is either Raticate, Fearow or Beedrill. Fearow is incredibly bad compared to Pidgeot, and Nintendo nerfed Beedrill quite a lot. Butterfree also makes Beedrill pretty redundant. Therefore, Raticate is my choice. It can learn Superfang (level 40), a trademark move which cuts the foe's HP in half! Shadow Ball is also available (from TM30, found in the Celadon Game Corner) which is the best Ghost move! Also Raticate can make use of Return (from TM27, found in Route 12) which can be very powerful if the Pokémon likes it's Trainer a lot.
This might work after all...

Raticate used to be one of my favorites. My first play-through of Blue involved a ridiculously powerful Raticate that carried me about halfway through the game because I never bothered to buy Poké Balls and capture new minions.

You bet!

The saving bug was slightly annoying, but we can get going again. Mankey is slightly better, Pidgey slightly worse, and Squirtle has more emphasis on Defense.

With a full team assembled, it's time to really begin our journey.
I wanna be the very best, like noone ever was
To catch them is my real test, to train them is my cause

These weaklings are doomed to forever being in the PC.

Going through the whole Virdian Forest was not a problem. There's a Potion lying here.

With Water Gun, we should be able to pummel Brock into humiliation in a cascade of water.

In Pewter Town, there's a fellow that makes you *yawn* slightly drowsy.

Pewter also has a flourishing marijuana industry.

Brock and his assistant are really intimate with each other.

In the original games, Brock was a man of dignity and determination. And then the anime appeared, and Brock was reduced to a former shadow of himself, a man with a fetisch for nurses and breeding Pokémon.

That wasn't so hard, was it?
Next we're heading east, towards Mount Moon. One of Oak's aides give you a pair of running shoes, which means you won't move so painfully slowly anymore. Make sure you battle each and every trainer, because you're going to need both experience and cash in copious amounts.

Take that, creationism!

This deal is, should we say, a load of carp. *Badum-TISCH* No thanks.

Mount Moon next...

This is so genius, it inspires me to make walkthroughs myslef like this on WP, and i will make it of Heartgold and Soulsilver when they come out
BTW it would rock of you would do some more games to do walkthroughs of, that would a plus
This game (the original) dominated my childhood, the tv show, the toys, candy everythiGN of it.
The victory road was a huge pain in the *ss when i was 6, i couldnt figure out the last part with the boulder.

That's cool! Good luck!

I'll do Pokémon Emerald when I'm finished with this one.

It's an important part of every childhood.

Yeah, it was pretty hard when one was young.

This reminds me of some comics called Super Effective, it is quite entertaining.

Time to go into the caves! Butterfree with it's confusion can take down all the wild things in this cave, but will run out of PP quickly.
Hmm... how can Mankey do a Low Kick and still hit? The thing is levitating, damnit.
Yoink!
Don't spill your drink all over your screen out of sheer excitement if you see one of these critters; they're far more common than in Blue, Red and Yellow.
Team Rocket will take everything that isn't nailed down. And if they can pry it loose, it's not nailed down in their book.
A free Moon Stone! What's next, a free iPhone?
Uh-oh, a greedy Supernerd! He's got a Grimer, a Voltorb and a Koffing.
Even though Kabuto is more badass, Omanite is probably the better choice.
The fresh sunlight sets upon us again! Be aware that one you reach Cerulean, you won't be able to go back for quite some time. (Can't they build some stairs or something?)
How can he still be in business?! We'll need another way to get a bike...
Slowbro doesn't learn Sonicboom! You're a horrible person! O_O
Free Rare Candy lying around in this backyard. I'm not sure if it's always in this spot or some other tile.
What's that funky music... oh, it's just Gunnar again. Let's see what Pokémon he's caught this time around.
Pidgey evolves at level 18! Gunnar's a cheat!
But he doesn't evolve Abra into Kadabra? What kind of trainer is he, anyway? Abra is easy pickings as it only knows teleport. When you've defeated the rival he gives you some kind of gossip device and leaves. Now, we're going over the Nugget Bridge and towards Bill's house. This area is practically teeming with trainers waiting to strike at unsuspecting people, such as you. Though they never seem to battle each other.
That's some bad luck, right there.
I wanna join, but the stupid game won't let me...
In these dark spots, you will find berries...
Rattata fights a foe during auspicious conditions...
Maybe Mankey will actually do some work now. Karate Chop and his high attack power will make him a force to be reckoned with.
Gasp! A talking Pokémon!
This reminds me of The Fly...
I wanted to leave him to his misery, but he kneeled on his knees and begged me to help him, in the grotesque mutant voice he had aquired. I couldn't stand his screams, so I finally helped him out.
This'll come in handy in Vermillion...
With Pikachu on level 17, I challenge Misty to a fight...
Erik sends out Pikachu.
Misty sends out Staryu.
Pikachu uses Thundershock on Staryu.
Staryu uses Water Pulse on Pikachu.
Pikachu uses Thundershock on Staryu.
Staryu faints.
Erik sends out Butterfree.
Misty send out Starmie.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Butterfree.
Butterfree is confused.
Butterfree uses Sleep Powder on Starmie.
Starmie falls asleep.
Erik uses Potion on Pikachu.
Starmie is fast asleep.
Erik sends out Pikachu.
Starmie wakes up.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Pikachu.
Pikachu faints.
Erik sends out Pidgey.
Pidgey uses Quick Attack on Starmie.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Pidgey.
Pidgey faints.
Erik sends out Wartortle.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Wartortle uses Bite on Starmie.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Wartortle is confused.
It hurt itself in it's confusion!
Starmie uses Swift on Wartortle.
Wartortle is confused.
Wartortle uses Bite on Starmie.
Erik uses Potion on Wartortle.
Misty uses Super Portion on Starmie.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Wartortle is confused.
It hurt itself in it's confusion!
Erik uses Potion on Wartortle.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Wartortle uses Bite on Starmie.
Erik sends out Mankey.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Mankey.
Mankey faints.
Erik sends out Rattata.
Erik uses Potion on Wartortle.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Rattata.
Rattata faints.
Erik sends out Wartortle.
Starmie uses Water Pulse on Wartortle.
Wartortle uses Bite on Starmie.
Starmie uses Swift on Wartortle.
Wartortle uses Bite on Starmie.
Starmie faints!
That was a narrow victory, but a victory nevertheless!
We'll head towards Vermillion next...

My brother doubts I'll actually make Pokémon League with these Pokémon. I'll show him! He's also kind of pissed I named my rival after him. (He named his rival after the new school he's going to in a few weeks... )
I don't know. That smug grin looks kind of suspicious. Also, he has dirt and pieces of wood all over his Team Rocket suit. He uses a level 17 Machop and a level 17 Drowzee in a futile attempt to destroy you. (Drowzee? Gamefreak must have been a bit 'drowzy' when making up that name). He returns the TM28 Dig he stole, but instead of us giving it back to the couple in the house, we're just going to keep it!. I wish there were Karma scores in this game.
Fun fact: Pikachu became the star of the Anime series because it was voted the 'cutest' Pokémon by a number of fans. I can sort of imagine an alternate universe where Meowth is Ash's cute companion who defeats everyone with it's Slash attacks, and Pikachu is Team Rocket's talking, but incompetent, henchman.
A waste of money in my opinion.
You beat demons so badly that they are barely conscious, you enslave them, and you make them slay, or be slayed by, other monsters all day long. And then you pick some berries.
Woohoo! I sort of suspect Pidgeotto/Pidgeot will be the least useful in my team, however.
>.<
This will come in handy.
This guy and his Rapidash are really intimate with each other. O_O
At least he gives you this. Take it to the Bike Shop to get a free Bicycle.
A Spearow for a Farfetch'd? A fenomenally good trade if you ask me.
When I played Pokémon Gold for the first time I was so excited to see what sort of building had popped up, but there was still no building due to 'lack of funding'! That's a bullsh*t excuse, Nintendo.
Press 'Yes' and he'll give you a free iPhone, er I mean Old Rod.
I'm a friend of Bill, dawg!
Heal here instead of in Vermillion.
You smell.
One of the Illuminati! :O
Some valuable 'trash' in all three cans...
You smell too! The rival has a lvl 19 Pidgeotto, lvl 16 Raticate (!), lvl 18 Kadabra and lvl 20 Ivysaur.
Nintendo just has to make Gunnar cheat...
Goddamnit! *vomits simultaneously with the captain* Give the Captain a massage (try not to puke in his neck) and he'll give you a HM01 Cut.
Bon Voyage! Funny how ships look so small on the outside. If you trade with a friend who has Cut, you can get Surf without the S.S. Anne leaving. All you will find, however, is some kind of truck and a Lava Cookie. You have a great sense of humour, Nintendo.
Before dropping by at Lieutenant Surge, we're going on a detour to the Diglett Cave!
*drops jaw* I caught it just for the heck of it.
Also, this is the reason you might want to have a flying Pokémon in the lead if you want to avoid fighting.
If you have gathered data on 10 Pokémon (which you should have) you get HM05 Flash!
Sneak into the museum imn Pewter Town with your cutting skill, and you'll get this.
Your team is probably ill-equipped to fight Surge unless you picked Bulbasaur as a starter, because you have no direct counter to Electric Pokémon, and 33-50% of your team is weak against them. Therefore, you'll have to rely on brute force, namely Mankey and Rattata! Route 11, east of Vermillion, should be a good place to train.
Hell yes!
BTW, I caught a Meowth to use Cut, and it's Pickup ability gave me such luxuries like Nugget, PP Up and a bunch of berries! How fortunate.
After some intensive training, Raticate is in lvl 21 and Mankey in lvl 22, and it's time to play. Hyper Fang is a quite powerful move, BTW.
When you find one of these switches, the other one will be adjacent.
If he was a Seargeant, he'd be called Seargeant Surge. Hehehe. Let's send this yankee to hell.
Not too hard.
Phew, that sure was a long update!

From what I heared the decision of the main pokemon came down to Pikachu and Jigglypuff, and decided to with Pikachu because it appeals to both male and female. But this is why Jigglypuff makes so notable appearances, such as in the pokemon center where in Yellow Pikachu would get love hearts if you talked to it, it followed the anime characters for a length of time and is a playable character like Pikachu in Super Smash bros. melee and Brawl which the trainer from the red, blue, yellow, fire red and leaf green is also playable.
