I'll go on the record, I'm not that concerned with a person's avatar as, I feel it uniquely represents a person and all..Yes, hardly do I have an actual picture of what I look like but, that is cause in past times I'd been made fun of therefore, I choose to use an image of a favorite tv show or film to better represent me as such.. Still, I'm sure some people would rather see an image of my actual form more often than normal yet, I'm not so fond of doing such though, I'll get around to doing that in time..

I have no avatar. I like people to use their imaginations and create their own images in their heads without an external visual reference.

I see it as the difference between reading a book first then seeing the movie, as opposed to seeing the movie first then reading the book. If you read the book first, you form your own unique picture of what each of the characters look like, then the movie is "all wrong." If you see the movie first, all you see when you read the book are the movie stars!

I much prefer reading the book first before watching the movie.

Mine is a photo by Danish photographer/artist Lasse Hoile. It's also an album cover.

Sometimes I use a picture of myself, but I often take it down after a short while because I get embarrassed at having it up there 24/7. I feel the need to withdraw and hide I guess. So I replace it with a picture of a dragonfly when I feel like that. They are my favorite animal.

I find it confusing, but each to their own. My avatar is always me and not somebody else.

Really? The photographs are so professionally done. You look like Galadriel or somebody.

 I wonder what people make of mine...

Well I know I'm not the only one who thought from your avatar that you were male. (Well, Greentea said in another thread that she thought you were male, didn't say that your avatar was the reason, though.. I just remember her saying that you seemed like a something well-intentioned young man.. forget what the first thing was.. and you saying that three out of four wasn't bad. So now I know that you're female.)
It's makes me think of you as kinda silly. In a good way, though.

I always change mine. Sometimes I put myself there, but it sometimes feels...like it's not me, as it's but a face with nothing else, just like looking at anyone else.

I choose mine based on an interest or something related to it (usually fictional), but it also points to how I prefer to see myself as it encompasses far more than just another face.
